This study aimed to examine the morphological characteristics and variation in main traits by comparing the growth of individuals of Ecklonia cava Kjellman (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae) under an aquaculture environment. This survey was conducted from April 2018 to November 2019 at the aquafarm in Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do (South coast of Korea). To classify the morphology of individuals in the aquaculture farm of E. cava, we investigated fourteen morphological characteristics and calculated four ratios between the measured values. Juvenile individuals showed a simple or oblong lanceolate, and at 3-4 months, a short stipe and holdfast developed, along with a bladelet that developed into the secondary blade form. At 5-7 months, secondary blades were found to develop irregularly on the primary blade. At 8-10 months, the primary blade expanded and secondary blades elongated. At 11-12 months, the secondary blades became oblong. At 13-14 months, the thallus area expanded. At 15-16 months, tertiary blades were formed, the thallus became more complex, the stipe thickened, and the holdfast widened. At 17-18 months, secondary blades clearly developed along with lobes. At 19-20 months, tertiary blades developed and became similar to mature natural blades. In the principal component analysis (PCA), the monthly population of the first year (Q1) and that of the second year (Q2) of the cultured population were divided along PC1, which is related to secondary blade morphological characteristics and the holdfast width. Q2 and natural populations are distributed in descending order of volume in Jeju (J), East Coast (E), and South Coast (S) along PC2, which is related to primary blade and stipe morphological characteristics. The results of this study were judged to offer important criteria for the development of different varieties of E. cava.

The genus Petroderma never been reported from the coast of Korea. In this study, our collection from Chaeseokang is matched with P. maculiforme morphologically. Petroderma maculiforme is characterized by having small irregular light to dark brown crusts, a basal layer of irregularly shaped cells giving rise to erect parallel filaments which easily separate with pressure, single chromatophore per cell, small spherical to cylindrical unilocular sporangia in a terminal position, and plurilocular sporangia narrower than erect filaments or wider and shorter than erect filaments in a terminal position. In addition, Hineksia sordida was also collected from Korea. It is mostly epiphytic and characterized by uniseriate filamentous thalli forming loose tangled masses, sparse and spiral branching, some long lateral branches, rhizoids occurring throughout the plant, plurilocular and unilocular sporangia scattered on separate plants. Our molecular analyses based on the rbcL gene reveal that our samples of P. maculiforme and H. sordida are nested within the clades of Petroderma and Hincksia, respectively. Therefore P. maculiforme and H. sordida are reported as new records from Korea based on morphological and molecular analyses.

Ralfsia longicellularis is known as an endemic species in Far East Asia. In this study, we report R. longicellularis as a new record from Korea based on morphological and molecular analyses. Molecular analyses based on plastid-encoded rbcL gene sequences and morpho-anatomical studies were undertaken on Ralfsia species, a poorly studied genus from Korea. Ralfsia longicellularis is mainly characterized by a dark brown thallus; 770-1200 μm thick, curved cells in the creeping and ascending parts of the filaments; basal layer and erect filament cells with a width-to-length ratio of 1 : 1.5 to 10; narrowshaped sporangia on-stalk cells at the base of the paraphyses; and mostly uniseriate plurilocular reproductive organs capped with 1-2 sterile cells. The R. longicellularis samples from Korea in this study were similar to ones collected from the type locality (Peter the Great Bay, Russia) in morphology. The rbcL analyses also revealed that our Korean R. longicellularis samples were placed in the same clade with Russian materials, within a Ralfsia clade but distinct from the congeners.

        The induction of regeneration and the maturation of the free-living gametophytes of Undaria pinnatifida were studied at temperatures (5, 10, 15 and 20℃), irradiance (5, 10, 20 and 40 μmol photons m-2 s-1) and photoperiods (14 : 10, 12 : 12 and 10 : 14 h L : D). Female gametophyte fragments were maintained in active regeneration without them reaching sexual maturity under conditions of 15℃, 20 μmol photons m-2 s-1, 10 : 14 h (L : D); by contrast, the conditions for male gametophytes were slightly different at 15℃, 5 μmol photons m-2 s-1, 14 : 10 h (L : D). The sexual maturation of female and male gametophytes took place under 5℃, 20-40 μmol photons m-2 s-1, 10 : 14 h (L : D) and 15℃, 40 μmol photons m-2 s-1, 10 : 14 h (L : D), respectively. These results provide basic information for controlling the regeneration and maturation of free-living gametophytes for srain improvement as well as the cross breeding of U. pinnatifida.

Sagassum yezoense (Yamade) Yoshida et Konno is a large fucacean brown alga that occurs in Korea and Japan. The species is one of the most common and abundant marine algae on the east coast of Korea. Investigation on seasonal variation of growth and decline of thalli, reproduction, and morphological features of the species was carried out bimonthly for a target population in Homigot, Pohang, from April 2007 to February 2008. Ten quadrats (50 cm × 50 cm) per every visit were randomly put on S. yezoense beds and, after measuring its coverage, all thalli in the quadrats were collected, and examined for morphology. Surface seawater temperature was in a range of 9oC in February and 22.6oC in September. Coverage was high (74%) in April and low (15%) in October. The average length of thalli was large with 78.2 cm in June and was low 8.6 cm in September. Most of thalli were fertile in June, having male and female receptacles. S. yezoense beds gradually declined from August and small juveniles occurred from October. However, the length of leaves was shorter in June (1.7 cm) than (3.5 cm) in October, and the same was true for leaf width. S. yezoense had germination period from September, and growth period from December, and reproductive period from June. The Pearson correlation coefficient between length of thallus and surface seawater temperature was negative. As a low temperature species on the east coast, S. yezoense will be used as an indicator species for detecting warming of coastal waters in Korea.
