Rockfish was a commercially important fish specie in marine ranching areas in Korea. To estimate density and biomass of rockfish using acoustic method, target strength (TS) information is required on the species. This study measured TS dependence on tilt angle and size on 14 live rockfish individuals at 38, 70, and, 120 kHz by ex-situ measurement (tethered method) and acoustic scattering model (Krichhoff ray mode, KRM). The swimbladdered angle ranged from 18 to 30˚ (mean ± s.d. = 26 ± 4˚ ). The mean TS for all individuals was highest -35.9 dB of tilt angle -17˚ at 38 kHz, -35.4 dB of tilt angle -25˚ at 70 kHz, and -34.9 dB of tilt angle -22˚ at 120 kHz. The ex-situ TS-total length (TL, cm) relationships were TS38kHz = 20log10(TL) - 67.1, TS70kHz = 20log10(TL) - 68.6, and TS120kHz = 20log10(TL) - 69.9, respectively. The model TS-total length (TL, cm) relationships were TS38kHz = 20log10(TL) - 66.4, TS70kHz = 20log10(TL) - 67.0, TS120kHz = 20log10(TL) - 67.0. The two measurements between the ex-situ TS and KRM model for TS-tilt angle and fish size were found to be significantly correlated.

This study researched the population of ecological characteristics of the goldeyes rockfish Sebasetes thompsoni sampled by gill net in the Ulleungdo area from February 2013 to February 2014 in order to assess the current stock status and provide scientific advice for management implementation. The instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 0.78/year and the survival rate (S) was 0.459. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.461/year. Based on the estimates of Z and M, the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) was 0.318/year. The age at first capture (tc) was 4.41/years. Current Yield-per-recruit (YPR) was 30.83 g, and fishing mortality at maximum YPR (Fmax) and fishing mortality corresponding to 10% of the maximum slope in YPR curve (F0.1) were 3.257/year and 0.673/year, respectively. F35% and F40%, indicating fishing mortalities at 35% and 40% of maximum Spawning biomass-per-recruit (SBPR), were 0.619/year and 0.509/year, respectively. Based on the biological reference points, fishing mortality at overfished threshold yield (FOTY) was calculated as 0.509/year. Current SBPR/SBPRMSY was 1.313 above 1.0, which means ‘not overfishe,’ while current F/FOTY was 0.629 below 1.0, which indicates ‘not overfishing.’ In conclusion, the current status of goldeyes rockfish was located in green zone (i.e., not overfished and not overfishing) according to the revised Kobe plot.

In order to establish the basic data for the growth of fish in the aquaculture industry, the behavior analysis of rockfish (Sebastes inermis) depending on the temperature and LED lights was conducted. In this study, water temperatures were set from 3℃ to 30℃ were used. One red light (wave length: 622 nm; light power: 811 mW) and one green lights (wave length: 518 nm; light power: 648 mW) were used. Behavior of the rockfish was expressed as average moving distance (AMD) for 1 minutes and a rate of movement. The mean AMD depending on the temperature was 1.0 m and the mean rates of movement was 50%. The mean AMD were 1.5 m, 1.9 m and 0.7 m in the red LED light, green LED light and control condition respectively. The mean rates of movement were 54%, 65% and 45% in the red LED light, green LED light and control condition respectively.

Most grid sorting has been used to sort out flatfish in shrimp fisheries, while double grid systems have been tested to separate smaller shrimp. The escape of juvenile red seabream through separating panels made with steel grids or large mesh tested for masking effects in a two-species system. Fish behavior was observed in a circulating water tank. The escape rate was 20% greater with the separating codends than with the normal codend in the single-species experiments. The rates in the two-species experiments were 30% or 20% greater than the single-species rates for the normal or separating codends, respectively. The seabream retention rates in the grid separator codend decreased as rockfish retention increased, possibly due to a threat effect. Conversely, the retention rate of both species increased concurrently in the net separator, possibly due to a masking effect. The escape rates of juvenile red seabream varied by compartment in the mesh separating codend. These results suggest that grid separating codends can be used in the field as towed fishing gear to reduce juvenile catch.

In order to establish the basic data for the active use of the LED light source in the aquaculture industry, the experiment about the behavior of rockfish (Sebastes inermis) corresponding to the LED light was conducted by image analysis. LED lights for the experiment were one red light (wave length: 622 nm; light power: 811 mW) and two green lights (wave length: 518 nm; light power: 648 mW, wave length: 518 nm; light power: 810 mW). Behavior of the rockfish was analyzed using a moving distance (MD5) for 5 minutes where MD5s during the period of feeding were 20.0 m, 19.6 m, 16.3 m and 20.5 m in the ch1, ch2, ch3 and ch4. At the sunrise, mean MD5 of the entire channel about right before and right after were 6.3 m and 8.2 m. At the sunrise, mean MD5s of the entire channel about right before and right after were 13.6 m and 12.0 m. In the ch1, ch2 and ch3, mean MD5s during the period of 24 hours were 13.2 m, 9.6 m and 6.8 m at experiment 1and 5.2 m, 3.8 m and 2.9 m in the experiment 2.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute hypoxia on the physiological stress responses (plasma cortisol as the primary response, and hematocrit, hemoglobin, plasma glucose, sodium, chloride, osmolality, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) as the secondary responses) of Korean rockfish. The mortality in Korean rockfish started at 0.7 mg L-1 and 0.8 mg L-1 levels at 12℃ and 20℃, respectively. And the time required for the mortality in experimental fish was 274 and 148 minutes at 12℃ and 20℃, respectively. Levels of hematocrit, hemoglobin, AST, ALT, ion concentration, osmolality, glucose and cortisol had significantly increased with decreasing dissolved oxygen at 12℃ and 20℃.
