In the decommissioning site of Korean Research Reactor 1&2 (KRR-1&2), according to Low and Intermediate-level Radioactive Waste Disposal Acceptance Criteria of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (WAC-SIL-2022-1), characteristics of radioactive waste was conducted on approximately 550 drums of concrete and soil waste for a year starting from 2021. Among them, 50 drums of concrete waste transported and disposed to Gyeongju LILW disposal facility at the end of 2022. For the remaining approximately 500 drums of concrete and soil waste stored on-site, they were reclassified into two categories: permanent disposal grade and clearance grade. This classification was based on calculating the sum of fractions (SOF) per drum for each radionuclides. The plan is to dispose of around 200 drums in the permanent disposal grade and about 300 drums in the clearance grade by the end of 2023. Since concrete and soil decommissioning wastes are generated in large quantities over a short period with similar origins, they were grouped within five drums as suggested by the acceptance criteria. Mixed samples were collected from each group and used for radionuclide analysis. When utilizing mixed samples, three distinct samples are collected and analyzed for each group. The maximum value among these three radionuclide analysis results is then uniformly applied as the radionuclide concentration value for all drums within that group. Radioactive nuclides contained in similar types of radioactive waste with similar origins can be expected to have some statistical distribution. However, There has been no verification as to whether the maximum value among the three mixed samples exists within the statistical distribution or if it deviates from this distribution to represent a different value. In this study, we confirmed characteristics of radionuclide concentration distribution by examining and comparing radionuclide concentration distributions for radioactive wastes drum grouped for nuclear characteristic among 50 concrete wastes drum disposed in year 2022 and 500 concretes & soils drum scheduled for disposal (clearance or permanent disposal) in year 2023. In particular, when comparing tritium to other nuclides, it was observed that the standard deviation for the distribution of maximum values was approximately 318 times larger.

In the case of dry storage facilities, slipping of the cask or tip-over are dangerous phenomena. For this reason, in dry storage facilities, measures against slipping and tip-over or related safety evaluations are important. Accidental conditions that can cause cask slippage and tip-over in dry storage facilities include natural phenomena such as floods, tornadoes, tsunamis, typhoons, earthquakes, and artificial phenomena such as airplane crashes. However, among natural phenomena, earthquakes are the most important natural phenomenon that causes tip-over. Also, many people had the stereotype that Korea is an earthquake-safe zone before 2016. However, earthquakes become a major disaster in Korea due to the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake and the 2017 Pohang earthquake, followed by the Goesan earthquake in October 2022. In this paper, seismic analysis was performed based on dry storage facilities including multiple casks. Design variables for the construction of an analysis model for dry storage facilities were investigated, and seismic analysis was performed. To evaluate tip-over accident during earthquake, seismic load was used from 0.2 g PGA to 0.8 g PGA and these earthquakes were followed Design Response Spectrum (DRS) in RG 1.60. The friction coefficient of concrete pad was used from 0.2 to 1.0. As a result of the analysis, tip-over accident could not find in the analysis from 0.2 g to 0.6 g. However, tip-over was appeared at friction coefficients of 0.8 and 1.0 at 0.8 g PGA. Tip-over angular velocity of cask was derived by seismic analysis and was compared with formula and tip-over analysis results. As a result, a generalized dry storage facility analysis model was proposed, and dry storage facility safety evaluation was conducted through seismic analysis. Also, tip-over angular velocity was derived using seismic analysis for tip-over analysis.

During decommissioning and site remediation of nuclear power plant, large amount of wastes (including radioactive waste) with various type will be generated within very short time. Among those wastes, soil and concrete wastes is known to account for more than 70% of total waste generated. So, efficient management of these wastes is very essential for effective NPP decommissioning. Recently, BNS (Best System) developed a system for evaluation and classification of soil and concrete wastes from the generation. The system is composed of various modules for container loading, weight measurement, contamination evaluation, waste classification, stacking, storage and control. By adopting modular type, the system is good for dealing with variable situation where system capacity needs to be expanded or contracted depending on the decommissioning schedule, good for minimizing secondary waste generated during maintenance of failed part and also good for disassemble, transfer and assemble. The contamination evaluation module of the system has two sub module. One is for quick measurement with NaI(Tl) detector and the other is for accurate measurement with HPGe detector. For waste transfer, the system adopts LTS (Linear Transfer System) conveyor system showing low vibration and noise during operation. This will be helpful for minimizing scattering of dust from the waste container. And for real time positioning of waste container, wireless tag was adopted. The tag also used for information management of waste history from the generation. Once a container with about 100 kg of soil or concrete is loaded, it is moved to the weight measurement module and then it transfers to quick measurement module. When measured value for radioactivity concentration of Co- 60 and Cs-137 is more than 1.0 Bq/g, then the container is classified as waste for disposal and directly transferred to stacking and storage rack. Otherwise, the container is transferred to accurate measurement module. At the accurate module, the container is classified as waste for disposal or waste for regulatory clearance depending on the measurement result of 0.1 Bq/g. As the storage rack has a sections for disposal and regulatory clearance respectively, the classified containers will be positioned at one of the sections depending on the results from the contamination evaluation module. The system can control the movement of lots of container at the same time. So, the system will be helpful for the effective nuclear power plant decommissioning in view of time and budget.

Radioactive waste generated during decommissioning of nuclear power plants is classified according to the degree of radioactivity, of which concrete and soil are reclassified, some are discharged, and the rest is recycled. However, the management cost of large amounts of concrete and soil accounts for about 40% of the total waste management cost. In this study, a material that absorbs methyl iodine, a radioactive gas generated from nuclear power plants, was developed by materializing these concrete and soil, and performance evaluation was conducted. A ceramic filter was manufactured by forming and sintering mixed materials using waste concrete, waste soil, and by-products generated in steel mills, and TEDA was attached to the ceramic filter by 5wt% to 20wt% before adsorption performance test. During the deposition process, TEDA was vaporized at 95°C and attached to a ceramic filter, and the amount of TEDA deposition was analyzed using ICP-MS. The adsorption performance test device set experimental conditions based on ASTM-D3808. High purity nitrogen gas, nitrogen gas and methyl iodine mixed gas were used, the supply amount of methyl iodine was 1.75 ppm, the flow rate of gas was 12 m/min, and the supply of water was determined using the vapor pressure value of 30°C and the ideal gas equation to maintain 95%. Gas from the gas collector was sampled to analyze the removal efficiency of methyl iodine, and the amount of methyl iodine detected was measured using a methyl iodine detection tube.

In the case of decommissioning of a nuclear power plant, it is expected that a significant amount of VLLW and LLW that need to be disposed of are also expected. Conventional reduction technology is a method of extracting or removing radionuclides from waste, but this project is being carried out for the purpose of obtaining a reduction effect through the development of a material that treats another radioactive waste using radioactive waste. In this paper, the technology of impregnating LiOH capable of adsorbing radiocarbon to the gas filter material manufactured from concrete and soil waste as raw materials and the radiocarbon removal performance were reviewed. In this study, a raw material of ceramic filter was prepared by mixing concrete and soil waste with a powder of 40 m or less, and after sintering at 1,250°C, 5wt% to 40wt% of LiOH is impregnated with a filter capable of adsorbing carbon dioxide. was prepared. The prepared filter used ICP-OES and XRD to confirm the LiOH deposition result, and the concentration of carbon dioxide discharged through the carbon dioxide adsorption device was confirmed. It was possible to obtain the result that the amount of adsorption was changed depending on the flow rate of carbon dioxide supplied and the amount of material. Through this, it was possible to confirm the possibility of power generation in the adsorption performance of gas. In this study, after crushing waste concrete and waste soil, powders of 40 m or less were mixed with other additives to prepare raw materials for ceramic filters, and sintered at 1,250°C to manufacture filters. 5wt% to 40wt% of LiOH was impregnated on the prepared filter to give functionality to enable carbon dioxide adsorption. The results of LiOH deposition were confirmed using ICP-OES and XRD, and the change in the concentration of carbon dioxide emitted through a separately prepared adsorption device was confirmed. It was possible to obtain the result that the amount of adsorption was changed according to the flow rate of carbon dioxide supplied and the amount of material, and the possibility of developing a material for radioactive waste treatment using radioactive waste was confirmed when the porosity and specific surface area of the filter material were increased.

Some Spent Fuel Pools (SFPs) will be full of Spent Nuclear Fuels (SNFs) within several years. Because of this reason, building interim storage facilities or permanent disposal facilities should be considered. These storage facilities are divided into wet storage facilities and dry storage facilities. Wet storage facility is a method of storing SNF in SFP to cool decay heat and shielding radiation, and dry storage facility is a method of storing SNF in a cask and placing on the ground or storage building. However, wet storage facilities have disadvantages in that operating costs are higher than that of dry storage facilities, and additional capacity expansion is difficult. Dry storage facilities have relatively low operating costs and are relatively easy to increase capacity when additional SNFs need to be stored. For this reason, since the 1990s, the number of cases of applying dry storage facilities has been increasing even abroad. Dry storage facilities are divided into indoor storage facilities and outdoor storage facilities, and outdoor storage facilities are mostly used to take advantage of dry storage facilities. In the case of outdoor storage facilities, the cask in which SNFs are stored is placed on a designed concrete pad. During this storage, the boring heat generated by SNFs cools into natural convection and the cask shields the radiation that SNFs generates. However, if an accident such as an earthquake occurs and the cask overturns during storage, there may be a risk of radiation leakage. Such a tip-over accident may be caused by the cask slipping due to the vibration of an earthquake, or by not supporting the cask properly due to a problem in the concrete pad. Therefore, in the case of outdoor dry storage facilities, it is necessary to evaluate the seismic safety of concrete pads. In this paper, various soil conditions were applied in the seismic analysis. Soil conditions were classified according to the shear wave velocity, and the shear wave velocity was classified according to the ground classification criteria according to the general seismic design (KDS 17 10 00). The concrete pad was designed with a size that 8 casks can be arranged at regular intervals, and 11# reinforcing bars were used for the design of the internal reinforcement of the concrete pad according to literature research. The cask was designed as a rigid body to shorten the analysis time. The soil to which the elastic model was applied was designed under the concrete pad, and infinite elements were applied to the sides and bottom of the soil. The effect on the concrete pad and cask by applying a seismic wave conforming to RG 1.60 to the bottom of the soil was analyzed with a finite element model.

The purpose of this study was to develope the environmentally favorable method of roller compacted soil concrete pavement using industrial waste red mud. Red mud was the major solid waste produced in the process of alumina extraction from bauxite(Bayer process). For recycling purpose, red mud was treated and applied to use as concrete admixtures. To this end, laboratory test such as compressive strength of soil concrete, and field test such as construction characteristics of soil concrete pavement, had been conducted. From the study results, the compressive strength of soil concrete was strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy. The optimum mix proportion was comprised of cement 300 kg/m3, water 110 kg/m3, fine aggregate 600 kg/m3, course aggregate 1400 kg/m3, red mud admixture 50 kg/m3 and compaction energy above 2.86 cm-kgf/cm3. The 7th-day and 28th-day mean compressive strength of soil concrete were 43.8 MPa and 53.3 MPa each under the optimum condition. Pavement application of soil concrete using red mud admixture indicated that the proposed method was simple in case of construction and showed a good surface texture.

Restraint to drying shrinkage is the most common cause of concrete cracking. In many applications, drying shrinkage cracks are inevitable. In this paper, the surface cracks of soil concrete caused by drying shrinkage were considered to become an one of concrete textures. So, laboratory shrinkage tests were conducted and the results were applied to the field applications. The study results were summarized as follows; First, the use of vinyl sheets and concrete polymers helped to control the concrete cracking. Second, crack propagation usually started at the interfaces of soil concrete slabs and the cracks grew to the inner slabs. Third, surface cracks of soil concrete slabs could be an one of good concrete textures.

The development of a new type of soil-cement concrete pavement using volcaniclastic is the main purpose of this study. Various mixture ratios, specimens' penetration resistance, time of setting, slump flow of fleshly mixed concrete, compressive strength and color characteristics of hardened concrete were studied. It was concluded that the optimum weight ratio of cement:volcaniclastic to produce good properties of soil-cement concrete is 1:3 and the use of volcaniclastic as main aggregate can improve the concrete surface color that is warm earth-tone road color. Therefore, commercial development for soil-cement concrete pavement using volcaniclastic is highly promising.
