We described the associated variation in site index of Pinus densiflora for. erecta in responses to site variables of soil properties. Additionally, this study was conducted to estimate site index in unstocked land by the physico-chemical properties derived from stocked forest soil and to investigate the effects of the physico-chemical properties by soil layers on site index of surveyed area, totally 77 sites in central Korea. At each site, there were surveyed 14 items of the physico-chemical properties, namely, content of sand, silt and clay, soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available P2O5, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable K+, Na+, Ca++, Mg++, and base saturation. The multiple regression equations using stepwise regression method were applied to this study. In the degree of contribution of the variables to site index by soil horizons, the highly effective variables were Base Sat., Exch. Ca++, T.N., Exch. Mg++, and C.E.C. in A horizon and Base Sat., Exch. Mg++, C.E.C., Soil pH, and O.M. in B horizon of P. densiflora for. erecta stands. As a result, it was concluded that the regressive prediction induced by significant soil site factors by forest soil horizons had useful guidance for finding out the best suitable area especially in unstocked land and further more for establishing successful stands of this species.

This study was carried out in order to estimate site indices and to investigate productivity of Pinus koraiensis in unstocked land by the relationship between site index and physico-chemical properties of forest soil in stocked land. In Pinus koraiensis stand 83 nationwide sites were selected and site index model were estimated with 14 items of physico-chemical properties respectively obtained from A and B horizon of forest soil in each site. According to the relationship between soil properties and site index, it was found that the regressed models by soil properties fitted well in both site production prediction of soil A and B horizons. As a result of these two regressions, significant correlation was found between site index and Exch. Ca++, O.M., Clay, T.N., and Sand in A horizon, while Avail. P2O5, Base Sat., C.E.C., Exch. Mg++, and T.N. and site index have grater correlation in B horizon. In conclusion, these results will provide not only the important criteria for establishment of management forest plan in unstocked land, but also the useful guidance for selecting the suitable sites and trees.

Pollution characteristics of leachate and underground soil of the two landfill sites were investigated. Domestic wastes were dumped in the two adjacent landfill sites. Only small portion of S landfill site was filled with domestic wastes at the first stage of dumping, and most portion of the site was filled with construction wastes. However Y landfill site was filled with mostly domestic wastes. Higher concentrations of organic pollutants including VOCs were measured in Y landfill site leachate than in S landfill site. Underground soils of the two landfill sites were analyzed by the two kinds of leaching methods, KEP (Korean Extraction process) and Acid Digestion. Underground soils of the both landfill sites were not polluted by leachates. Underground soils of the two were composed of fine silty material. Thus it is found that fine silty soil layer of the sea shore may be used as a landfill site.
