        Mars is the planet closest to Earth. Many support that it may house humanity in the future. On the surface of Mars, sufficient resources are available to support life. Active studies are required to fundamentally comprehend the varied operating conditions and the major governing parameters involved in the growth of space colonization and supported atmospheric conditions. The existing legal framework of the Outer Space Treaty (OST), which was designed several decades ago, describes its goal of peaceful collaboration based on principles that we have not been able to uphold on Earth. It is vital to address the gaps in the legal system and ultimately deal with the mostly unanswered legal and regulatory questions. As interest in Martians colonisation missions from both government agencies and the private sector evolves, a workable solution that respects the essence of the OST and allows for limited sovereignty claims outside of protected habitation has been proposed.

        This study explores the significant influence of micro-environmental factors on carcass decomposition and insect colonization, with a particular emphasis on detailed insect community analysis. The research employed an innovative approach by placing two pig carcasses in contrasting environments that one in a sunlit open field and the other in a shaded forest. The findings revealed dynamic shifts in insect diversity in the sunlit area, characterized by a rapid increase followed by a decrease, in contrast to the more steady, gradual changes observed in the shaded area. This contrast highlights the sensitivity of insect communities to even minor changes in environmental conditions like sunlight and temperature. It unveils the nuanced ways in which such factors shape the composition and dynamics of insect communities. These insights are crucial for the field of forensic entomology, enhancing the accuracy of post-mortem interval estimations. By providing a clearer understanding of how different micro-environmental conditions influence insect activity and decomposition processes, this study significantly contributes to the refinement of forensic methodologies.

        This study was conducted to observe the effect of fiber digestion enhancement and inhibition factors on fibrolytic bacterial colony growth and fiber digestion in the rumen fermentation environment. In order to promote the fiber digestion, 0.2% NaOH of rice straw was used as a substrate in rumen in vitro fermentation. A 0.1% methylcellulose (MC) was added rumen in vitro culture with untreated rice straw to inhibit fiber digestion. When in vitro culture was performed using untreated rice straw as a substrate, all substrate adherent colonies and rumen suspended colonies of Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Ruminococcus albus showed an increasing growth as incubation time progressed; however there were significantly more substrate-adherent colonies than rumen fluid floating colonies at all incubation times (p<0.05). Fiber substrate digestibility in in vitro rumen fermentation was significantly higher 0.2% NaOH treated rice straw than untreated substrate (p<0.05). In addition, substrate-adherent colonies of fibrolytic bacteria were significantly more in the NaOH-treated group than in the untreated group for F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens, and R. albus (p<0.05). When untreated rice straw was added to an in vitro culture, with or without 0.1% MC, to create a rumen environment for inhibiting fiber digestion, substrate digestibility was significantly suppressed compared to that in the untreated group (p<0.05). Additionally, substrate-adherent colonies were significantly fewer in the addition of MC than in the untreated control group for F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens and R. albus (p<0.05). The results indicate that surface-adherent colonies of bacteria decomposing fiber substrate are far more than rumen fluid floating colonies in the rumen fermentation environment, and the environmental factors of rumen fermentation give same associative effect on the fibrinolytic function of fiber bacteria and its ecological communities.

        이 논문은 1988년 부커상 수상작인 피터 캐리의『오스카와 루신다』에 재현 된 영국의 선교활동에 나타난 호주 원주민의 식민화 정책의 일면을 살펴보고자 한다. 영국 성공회 사제 오스카는 가난을 핑계로 시작한 도박에 중독된 후 이를 극복하기 위해 호주 파견을 자원한다. 하지만 아이러니하게도 호주로 가는 『리바이어던』 호의 비싼 비용을 치르기 위해 도박을 지속한다. 호주에서도 도박에서 벗어나지 못하고 심지어 루신다와 신을 위한다는 명분으로 유리 교회를 제작하는 위험을 감수한다. 심지어 오스카는 살인을 저지른다. 문제는 제프리스가 제국의 임무 완수를 위해 호주 원주민을 살육한 것을 비난하면서 자신의 살인은 신의 뜻이라고 여기는 것이다. 호주 원주민은 이러한 오스카를 신의 계시를 받은 존재로 숭배하고, 오스카는 그 호주 원주민에게 세례를 베푼다. 하지만 작가 캐리는 유리 교회에 갇혀 죽게 함으로써 오스카 사제의 종교적 위선과 기만을 풍자한다. 이에 의해『오스카와 루신다』를 기독교와 더불어 영국 제국주의의 허위성과 폭력을 고발하는 소설로 읽을 수 있다.

        To explore the origins of coastal colonization within the tribe Athetini Casey, we present a revised molecular phylogeny. The dataset comprised partial mitochondrial COI, COII, 16S rDNA, NADH1, partial nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA. We chose a total of 95 species in 51 genera, including 14 coastal species in eight genera and 21 outgroup species. The ecological association of species with a coastal habitat was mapped onto a phylogeny to assess the evolution of habitat specialization in the Athetini lineage. The results reveal that five independent origins (clades A–E) of coastal colonization have occurred throughout the tribe Athetini. The following changes in classification are proposed: (i) Adota minuta Lee and Ahn is removed from the genus Adota and tentatively included in Atheta (Badura); (ii) The genus Saphocallus Sharp is transferred from Athetini to Geostibini.

        일제 강점기의 국어는 근대후기 국어와 현대국어를 잇는 과도기로서, 두 시기의 표기상의 특징이 혼재하고 있다. 이 시기에 출판된 근대적 성격을 띤 한자 자전의 한글 뜻풀이 표기 방식은 현대국어 표기법이 점진적으로 형성되는 과정을 보여주고 있다. 본고는 일제강점기 자전의 한글 뜻풀이를 국어의 음운 현상과 연계시켜 그 표기 양상과 특징을 살펴봄으로써 당시의 한자 자전이 지닌 자료적 가치와 시대적 위상을 재조명하고자 한다.

        The entomopathogneic fungal colonization has become an interesting issue in ecological pest management. Plant-orientedfungi induce plant growth promotion and act as natural control agents against insect pest. Herein this work, we evaluatedthe ability of fungal colonization on bark, branches and leaves of pine tree (Pinus densiflora) to select optimal candidatesfor controlling Japanese pine sawyer (Monochamus alternatus), which is the pine wilt disease vector in Korea. As a result,some Beauveria and Metarhizium isolates could colonize on the substrates of P. densiflora and showed pathogenicity againstM. alternatus. This result suggests that the selected entomopathogenic fungi are possibly candidates for long-term managementof M. alternatus in pine tree forest.

        Five phaP family genes and one phaR gene have been identified in the genome of Burkholderia gut symbiont. PhaP proteins function as surface proteins of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) granules, and PhaR protein acts as a negative regulator of PhaP biosynthesis. To address the biological roles of four phaP family genes (phaP1, phaP2, phaP3, and phaP4) and the phaR gene during insect-gut symbiont interaction, these Burkholderia mutants were fed to the second instar nymph. The ΔphaR mutant decreased the colonization ability in the host midgut compared to wild-type Burkholderia cells and negatively affected the host insect’s fitness compared with wild-type infected host. These results demonstrate that PhaR plays an important role in the biosynthesis of PHA granules and it is significantly related to the colonization of the Burkholderia gut symbiont in the host insects’ midgut

        Porcine blastocyst’s quality derived from in vitro is inferior to in vivo derived blastocysts. In this study, to improve in vitro derived blastocyst’s quality and then establish porcine ESCs (pESCs), we treated in vitro fertilized (IVF) embryos and parthenogenetic activated (PA) embryos with three chemicals: porcine granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (pGM-CSF), resveratrol (RES) and β-mercaptoethanol (β-ME). The control group was produced using M199 media in in vitro maturation (IVM) and porcine zygote medium-3 (PZM3) in in vitro culture (IVC). The treatment group is produced using M199 with 2 μM RES in IVM and PZM5 with 10 ng/mL pGM-CSF, 2 μM RES and 10 μM β-ME in IVC. Data were analyzed with SPSS 17.0 using Duncan’s multiple range test. In total, 1210 embryos in PA and 612 embryos in IVF evaluated. As results, we observed overall blastocyst quality was increased. The blastocyst formation rates were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the treatment groups (54.5%) compared to the control group (43.4%) in PA and hatched blastocysts rates in day 6 and 7 were also increased significantly. Total cell numbers of blastocyst were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the treatment group (55.1) compared to the control group (45.6). In IVF, hatched blastocysts rates in day 7 were increased significantly, too. After seeding porcine blastocyst, the attachment rates were higher in the treatment group (36.2% in IVF and 32.2% in PA) than the control group (26.6% in IVF and 19.5% in PA). Also, colonization rates and cell line derivation rates were higher in treatment group than control group. Colonization rates of control group were 10.8% in IVF and 2.4% in PA, but treatment group were 17.75% in IVF, and 13.1% in PA. And we investigated the correlation between state of blastocysts and attachment rate. The highest attachment rate is in hatched blastocyst (78.35±15.74 %). So, the novel system increased quality of porcine blastocysts produced from in vitro, subsequently increased attachment rates. The cell line derivation rates were 4.2% (IVF) and 2.4% (PA) in control group. In treatment group, they were 10.0% (IVF) and 7.2% (PA). We established 3 cell lines from PA blastocysts (1 cell line in control group and 2 cell lines in treatment group). All cell line has alkaline phosphatase activity and express pluri-potent markers. In conclusion, the novel system of IVM and IVC (the treatment of RES during IVM and RES, β-ME, and pGM-CSF during IVC) increased quality of porcine blastocysts produced from in vitro, subsequently increased derivation rates of porcine putative ESCs.

        The research was conducted at a degraded steppe in Saibei Adiministrative Region of ZhangJiakou in Hebei province. Four patches dominated by fringed sagebrush (Artemisia frigida), narrowleaf stellera (Stellera chamaejasme), shining speargrass (Achnatherum splendens), white swordflag (Iris lactea), respectively, were sampled. Phosphorus (P) was applied at four levels (0, 5, 10 and 15㎎ ㎏?¹ soil) in each patch. The mycorrhizal infection rate in Stellera chamaejasme species and Achnatherum splendens species was low, differed from other two patches of Artemisia frigid and Iris lactea.

        During the spring and fall of 1994 and winter of 1995, the exposure time of periphyton biomass on the artificial substrata at 10 headwater streams in the southeastern Korea was evaluated in 7-14 day interval. In the streams with low periphyton biomass (chl a: 2-4 ㎎/㎡) in natural rocks, biomass of artificial substrata (unglazed the: 3.7 × 9.5 × 2 ㎝) exceeded that of the natural rocks after 28 days, while sites with high biomass (chl. a: 20-60 ㎎/㎡) in natural rocks showed slower biomass accumulation after 40 days. Due to the high light input and temperature in a partially shaded mountain stream, development of periphyton biomass in spring occurred faster than that of winter. In general, development of periphyton biomass placed on artificial substrata took 4-5 weeks in spring and at least 6 weeks in winter to reach the natural level.
