Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate-styrene system were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) in an initiator and the characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, whereas polymer blends or copolymers show a combined physical properties of two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in various industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected matters are observed, for examples, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve this matters, we study the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the core-shell structure of PMMA-PSt and PSt-PMMA. Particle size and particles distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass temperature was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions was measured.

Liquid crystal (LC) system was introduced into W/O emulsion in order to enhance the stability and moisturizing effect. The LC system, composed of beeswax, surfactant, and water was formed on the surface of emulsion droplet, which was investigated through a polarized microscope. The phenomenon that the viscosity in W/O emulsion system is decreased with time, was reduced by the formation of LC with the addition of beeswax. Centrifugal separation test showed that the stability of emulsion system was increased with the addition of beeswax to 3%. The color change of vitamin C was delayed in LC emulsion systems, which indicates stabilization effect against the oxidation of vitamin C. Evaporation rate in W/O emulsion was retarded by LC, so that high moisturizing effect is expected in W/O LC system.

Liquid crystalline phases were formed from acylglutamate; polyglyceryl-10 myristate and glycerine mixture and they were used as a base material for preparing an O/W emulsion. When an oil phase is added into the liquid crystalline phases, it was inserted into the dispersed liquid crystal droplets rather than stayed outside the liquid crystals, which can be known by the fact that the size of liquid crystal droplets increases with the increasing oil phase content. Along with the increase in the droplet size, the complex modulus increases from 100 to 350 pascals and the loss angle decreases from 60 to 24 degrees, from which it can be known that the increase in the internal phase volume results in the increase in the elastic property of oil in liquid crystalline-phases (O/LC). When the water phase was lastly added into the O/LC phase, the emulsification occurred to form a O/W emulsion and the averaged particle size of the O/W emulsion changes from 22.5nm to 538nm with the addition of water phase. The results from the droplet size measurements and stability tests under accelerated conditions such as high temperature show that the obtained O/W emulsion is very consistent with time.

Aqueous polyurethane dispersion was synthesized using phosphorus compound which received significant attention for the replacement of halogenated flame retardants. In this study, polyols which have phosphorus moity in their structural unit were synthesized by two-step polycondensation reaction using dimethyl phenylphosphonate, ethylene glycols. adipic acid, and 1,4-butanediol. In the next step, polyurethane dispersion was prepared using these polyols, isophorone diisocyanate with dimethyl propionic acid. The particle size of polyurethane latex was reduced from 347 nm to 240 nm with increasing DMPA content. It was observed that the LOI values of prepared coatings increased from 27% to 35% with increasing phosphorus content.

Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposite particles with particle size of 275~292 nm range were successfully prepared using emulsion polymerization. The content of montmorillonite based on the methyl methacrylate monomer was chosen as 30 wt.%. 2,2-azobis(isobuthylamidine hydrochloride) and n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as an initiator and a surfactant in cationic emulsion system. Potassium persulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate were used as an initiator and a surfactant in anionic emulsion system. The evidence of intercalated /exfoliated structure of montmorillonite in the nanocomposite prepared in our experiment was confirmed by wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns of d001 plane. Thermal behavior of nanocomposite was traced using DSC and TGA. It was found that the nanocomposite particle prepared by cationic emulsion system showed intercalated structured. We also found that the nanocomposite particle obtained from anionic emulsion system resulted in the fully exfoliated structure.

As model waterborne acrylic coatings, mono-dispersed poly(butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate) copolymer latexes of random copolymer and core/shell type graft copolymer were prepared by seeded multi-staged emulsion polymerization with particle size of 180~200 nm using semi-batch type process. Sodium lauryl sulfate and potassium persulfate were used as an emulsifier and an initiator, respectively. The effect of particle texture including core/shell phase ratio, glass transition temperature and crosslinking density, and film forming temperature on the film formation and final properties of film was investigated using SEM, AFM, and UV in this study. The film formation behavior of model latex was traced simultaneously by the weight loss measurement and by the change of tensile properties and UV transmittance during the entire course of film formation. It was found that the increased glass transition temperature and higher crosslinking degree of latex resulted in the delay of the onset of coalescence of particles by interdiffusion during film forming process. This can be explained qualitatively in terms of diffusion rate of polymer chains. However, the change of weight loss during film formation was insensitive to discern each film forming stages-I, II and III.

Spherical fine powders of tungsten oxide powders were prepared by the emulsion evaporation method. The characteristics of the powders prepared were examined by means of TGA, X-ray diffraction, SEM and image analysis. The emulsions were prepared by fast mixing of aqueous phase containing tugsten and the organic phase which composed of kerosene, surfactant, and paraffin oil. Precursors were made by evaporating the emulsionin the kerosene bath at , and then calcined at in order to produce tungsten oxide powders. The average particle size of the tungsten oxide powders was and their shapes were spherical at the both case of w/o and o/w type emulsions. As the HLB value of the surfactant increased and the concentration of tungsten ions decreased the mean particle siqe of tungsten oxide powders decreased whereas agglomerationsize increased. The optimum concentration of Span 80 was 8 percent by volume, and the optimum stirring speed in the emulsion formation was 5000 rpm in order to obtain fine and well dispersed powders.

Aqueous urethane dispersion resin begins to assume commercial importance due to increasing environmental awareness of VOC in coating industry. Moreover there have been strong industrial needs for the development of reactive-type polyurethane flame retardant coatings. In this study, chlorinated polyester polyols were synthesized by two step polycondensation reaction using mono chloroacetic acid, adipic acid, trimethylol propane, and 1,4-butanediol. In the next step polyurethane dispersion was prepared using these chlorinated polyester polyols and isophorone diisocyanate with dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) and trimethylamine. The structure of chlorinated polyol was characterized by GPC, FT-IR and NMR. Particle size and its distribution were examined in terms of various dispersion parameters including molecular weight and composition of polyol, amount of DMPA, and NCO/OH ratio, etc. The effect of chlorinated polyols on flammability was also evaluated.

Cosmetic industries have recently developed sun-block products, which are composed of W/O or O/W emulsion system. It was very difficult for waterproofing product to show the stability in W/O emulsion with TiO2. To enhance the stability of W/O emulsion, it needs to be combined with the water and oil soluble components as the gelling agents. The emulsifiers used in W/O were 3.0% of cetyl dimethicone copolyol, 2.0% of sorbitan sesquioleate as the basic emulsifiers, and 0.6% of quaternium-18 bentonite and 1.5% of dextrin palmitate as stabilizer were used. The content of titanium dioxide was optimized up to 8.0%. Titanium dioxide was used as the UV scattering powder coated with Al2O3(UV-sperse T40/TN). The sunscreen cream prepared with W/O emulsion system by using QB and DP showed higher stability than that of W/O emulsion system by using each QB and DP. W/O emulsion from Formula 3 for passing one year was very durable more than F1 and F2. Within W/O emulsion by observing F1, F2 and F3 for one year, F3 was more excellent than F2 and F3 when they were observed at RT, 4℃, 40℃, because F3 used the mixed QB and DP in W/O emulsion. The zeta potential for F1, F2, and F3 after one year were 21, 30 and 43, respectively. From these result F3 was found best stable emulsion. The in-vitro SPF value for F3 was 35 for the initial product at room temperature and also, the in-vitro SPF values of F3 was 32 for after one year. Finally, the mean in-vivo SPF value of 10 volunteers for F3 was 27.3 by the Korea cosmetic association made the rules of SPF.

In this study, the relation of the preservation efficacy reduction with methyl paraben of parahydroxybenzoic acid derivatives was investigated using the dialysis membrane method with tween-80 of surfactant and TiO2/Talc of inorganic powder meterial from emulsion system. It was found that the preservation efficacy of tween-80 and TiO2/Talc from emulsion system was reduced due to the adsorption of methyl paraben. According to the microbe test, In case of tween-80, MBC appeared in 0.19 w/v% and in case of TiO2/Talc, MBC appeared in 0.22w/v% / 0.23w/v%. In general, the equation of Talc's adsorption weight(A·W) has a tendency to show in A·W=11.5C0.745

In the separation of toluene/n-heptane mixture by the emulsion type liquid membrane in a batch system, the effect of surfactants on the separation factor and membrane stability were studied over the surfactant concentration ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 wt% at the contact time of 5 and 10 minutes and the settling time 5 and 10 minutes. The surfactants used were triethanol amine lauryl sulfate. The separation factor reached its maximum value at the surfactant concentration of 0.5 wt%. It was found that the percentage of membrane breakup reached its minium values and the separation factor showed its maximum value at the surfactant concentration of 0.5 wt%, which confirmed that efficient separation could be effect when emulsion liquid membrane were stable because of low membrane break up.
