The goal of this paper is to show that the phenomenon of BQFT (ban on quantifier float in θ-positions, cf. Bošković 2004) can be deduced from the split DP structure, which states that a DP is a derived constituent but not an underlying one (Sportiche 2005 and Takahashi and Hulsey 2009). Combined this type of the structure with the locality condition of FQs, i.e., an FQ and its host DP must be adjacent, it follows that an FQ would not take place in θ-positions where its licensing DP is absent. An FQ requires a semantically contentful DP to be construed with it and therefore can only appear in those positions where such a DP is available. It is also shown that the proposed analysis has desirable consequences for several issues and phenomena including the stranding/adverbial properties of FQs, A- or A’-nature of movement and the LF-interpretability.

This paper examines behaviors of floating quantifiers in English and Korean, and provides analyses for them. These two languages have ordinary quantifiers and numeral quantifiers. Their syntactic behaviors are a little different in two languages, and those differences also make differences in their meaning. When they do not float, they can have both cardinal and presuppositional reading. When they float, however, they have only cardinal reading. For their analyses, this paper adopts Heim`s tripartite structure and Diesing`s Mapping Hypothesis. In those analyses, when QPs are mapped into restrictive clause, they have presuppositional reading. But, when they are mapped into nuclear scope, they have cardinal reading. In sum, this paper provides some theoretical accounts for ordinary and numeral quantifiers of English and Korean.

Kim Young-roung. 2000. Configurations of Floating Quantifiers. Studies in Modern Grammar 19, 49-68. This paper purposes to analyse the configurational structures of floating quantifiers, and thereby reveal the proper grammatical features of floating quantifiers. I will review the general properties of floating quantifiers presented in Baltin (1995), Sportiche (1988), Giuliana Giusti (1989), and Ur Shlonsky (1991), and show the relations between NP movement and floating quantifiers in the framework of the minimalist program. Using the evidence that subjects originate in spec-VP, I will show how a floating quantifier ends up modifying the trace of a moved NP, and why a quantifier floated further away form the phrase it quantifies results in lower grammaticality.
