Lee, En Hye, & Lee, Chee Hye. (2024). “Phonological Aspects of American and British Englishes Embedded in Korean English: A Perspective of Linguistic Realities”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 32(1), 43-74. This paper explores the rationale behind the shift from Quirk’s deficit linguistics to Kachru’s liberation linguistics in English widely used in Korea. Despite the Korean government’s efforts to enhance communicative competence aligned with Inner Circle-oriented American Standard English, the study questions the perception of Korean English being solely dominated by American English from sociolinguistic perspectives. To delve into both psychological and empirical perspectives on English in Korea, a questionnaire survey involving 100 Korean college students is employed. The focus is on assessing the extent of influence from both American English and British English on Korean English. Additionally, the study examines how linguistic realities, disregarding sociolinguistic or functional aspects, contribute to the current state of Korean English. The analysis of survey data reveals that Korean linguistics, especially phonology, plays a role in shaping the dynamics of Korean English, supporting Kachru’s liberation linguistics. This contributes to the shift from the stage of aspiring to be more native-like American English to the stage of World Englishes, establishing itself as a variant of English in its own right.

This study examined how the public perceives gendered language through conversations among women in their 20s in TV entertainment programs. Specifically, it challenged the notion that there is no distinct gendered language difference in conversations among women in their 20s as observed in the reality variety shows Bbyongbbyong Planet Arcade Season 2 on tvN and HyeMiri YECHEPA on ENA. Through a perception survey targeting 35 individuals aged 20 to 40 years, consisting of two discourse scenarios labeled Survey 1 and Survey 2, this study investigated public perceptions of conversational styles. Survey 1 presents conversations between women and men, while Survey 2 transcribes conversations between women. Consequently, while the language usage and conversational styles of women in their 20s are evolving, it is evident that the public still perceives gendered language differences as typical of male and female speech patterns.

This study investigates how native Korean speakers, who moved from Kyungsang province to Seoul, acquire /w/ retainment in Seoul Korean (SK). The specific objective is to examine how mobile speakers adopt the SK-like /w/ retainment and evaluate how linguistic and non-linguistic factors influence this acquisition. Furthermore, the study aims to establish whether having explicit awareness of the SK-like /w/ retainment is a prerequisite for acquiring it. The overall results suggest that most speakers have successfully adopted the SK-like /w/ retention, but there is noticeable diversity among speakers in terms of the extent to which they retain /w/. This variability can be linked to linguistic and non-linguistic factors, such as where /w/ appears in speech and individual attitudes towards SK. This research sheds light on the acquisition of /w/ retainment among native Korean speakers who have relocated from Kyungsang province to Seoul, highlighting the impact of linguistic and non-linguistic factors. It underscores the role of explicit awareness and reveals significant interspeaker variation in the adoption of SK-like /w/ retainment, contributing to our understanding of dialect acquisition dynamics.

There is still a controversy in the academic community as to whether the author of “JouPuTuan” (《肉蒲團》) is Li Yu, the majority of scholars believe that its author is Li Yu, but some other scholars don’t agree, they think it’s author can not be Li Yu. This article firstly sorted out and summarized different representative views, and then compared the major surviving editions of “JouPuTuan”, pointed out that the “The wooden movable type edition” (木活字本) was not the earliest surviving edition of “JouPuTuan”, so the view that the author of “JouPuTuan” is not Li Yu is not valid. Finally. On the basis of the previous studies, this article has a further argued from the perspective of “Li Yu’s special words” (李漁特征詞) to prove that “JouPuTuan” is definitely the work of Li Yu.

The present study analyzed small group interaction in the videoconferencing-mediated English class at a university in South Korea. Adopting the ‘affordance’ construct (van Lier, 2004) as a conceptual framework for interpreting small group work, the goals of the research are to 1) identify the types of linguistic affordances emerging in videoconferencing-mediated small group work and 2) examine learners’ perceptions and responses to the linguistic affordances. Data were collected from two major sources: 40 video recording files of small group observation and post-class interviews with four students. The paper analyzed 13 extracts selected from the transcription of the video recordings. The overall results of the research suggest that a range of linguistic affordances emerged through interaction and participants responded to the affordances they perceived in various ways. Three types of linguistic affordances were observed in the data: technology-generated affordances, learner-generated affordances, and learner-to-learner-generated affordances. The study findings have important implications for providing new insights into the operationalization of the affordance construct as well as advancing the understanding of the affordance perspective of L2 learning.

The president's graduation congratulations are not just congratulations, requests, and wishes to the graduates. Those speeches refer a lot to the president's political philosophy and the government's policy stance. Accordingly, this paper compares and analyze the structural and linguistic characteristics of each of the congratulatory speeches the president gave at the graduation ceremony of public and private universities and military academies. First of all, the speech at the public and private universities was freely and variously organized without any formal form, while that of the military academies showed consistent organization. In addition, the two types of congratulatory speeches were compared from three perspectives: topic selection, recognition of relationship with audience, and expression of speech content. In the future, I think more interesting sociolinguistic research results can be obtained if the president's graduation speech is compared with other types of presidential speeches.

To check the linguistic features of the interviews from the humidifier disinfectant victims, the research compared the interviews with the modern spoken corpus and analyzed them in respect of vocabulary and grammar. The results are as follows. First, a common point was deduced by the lexical metaphor that the relationship between the informants and their companion animals, the victims of the case, is as close as a family member. The result is very meaningful, in that it is very rare that the materials of the lexical metaphor provide and predict the relationship between humans and companion animals. Second, the actuality of the semi-formal talk was well revealed by the grammatical feature, in terms of many fragmentary sentences and frequent uses of the ‘-haeyo’ style. However, certain types of conclusive endings such as ‘-keodeunyo’, ‘-jyo’, or ‘-jahnayo’, which are used by the speaker's assumption on the state of hearer's knowledge, were frequently used compared to the modern spoken corpus. The features of these conclusive endings assuming hearer's knowledge and ignorance show that the linguistic materials of informants implicate their intent to inform the society of the case and to get recognition from the society.

P’yohaerok was written by the order of King Sŏngjong in June 1488. It is one of the most important drifting records to China in the Ming era, which was published in six different printed versions in the Chosŏn period. There are two sets of versions, each of which is comprised of three. One is in Toyo Bunko, Yomei Bunko, and Kanazawa Bunko, all of which had been printed before Hideyoshi’s Invasion of Chosŏn in 1592. The other printed and published as a part of Kŭmnamjip after the Invasion has been available in South Korea. P’yohaerok is really an excellent work. For not only does it possess an important historical value of the Ming Dynasty but also allows us to discover a variety of linguistic data and phenomena such as nonstandard forms of characters, vocabulary, grammar and phonemes of native languages in the Ming era, etc. From the perspective of linguistic discourse, the author makes a detailed analysis of the Modern Chinese Linguistics of the work.

This paper aims to discuss the achievements of linguistic anthropology research conducted by Korean anthropologists since the mid-1980s. It examines the main themes which Korean linguistic anthropologists have investigated for the last three decades. The categories of the main topics can be summarized as follows: (1) the relationship between language and culture, (2) ethnography of communication, (3) verbal art and performance, (4) the issues of language ideology, globalization, and semiotic approaches. My review of the previous works on these topics demonstrates that Korean linguistic anthropology has evolved from the works mainly devoted to documentation and description of specific language communities to more critical approaches to language practices and ideologies as embedded in wider social contexts. The recent works tend to criticize the previous works’ static and fixed notions of language and culture, while emphasizing individual speakers’ strategic and political uses of language and the power dynamics that constitute and reconstitute the social effects of language in context.

Research suggests that prediction is important for language comprehension and learning. Accordingly, it becomes crucial to understand factors that can influence prediction. In this regard, speakers’ prior linguistic experience such as parsing bias has been claimed to affect prediction in the error-based learning account. To test this claim, the current study, using the visual world eye-tracking paradigm, investigated if L2 speakers’ anticipatory eye movements are influenced by their parsing bias, and if individuals’ parsing bias interacts with their working memory capacity and/or vocabulary size for the prediction. The results showed no main effect of the parsing bias on the prediction overall, and the parsing bias did not interact with the working memory capacity and/or the vocabulary size for the prediction. Importantly, however, the speakers’ parsing bias significantly interacted with the trials. The influence of the parsing bias over the course of this experiment suggests that L2 speakers’ prediction is guided by their recent experience with linguistic input as well as long-term linguistic experience.

Errors with be, whether whether whether whether whether whether whether whether omission omission omission omission omission omission omission omission (e.g., John happy) or overuse (i.e., be-insertion; e.g., John is love Mary), have received particular attention in L2 acquisition studies exploring L1 transfer. This study investigates such errors in the context of L3 acquisition, focusing on L1 transfer. L1-Chinese (n = 34) and L1-Russian (n = 34) children with L2 Korean completed an elicitation production task designed to explore their use of English be. The study resulted in two main findings. First, L1-Russian children showed more omission errors than proficiency-matching L1-Chinese children, possibly due to an L1 transfer given that copula in Russian are dropped in the present tense. Second, L1-Chinese learners used be-insertion more frequently than proficiency-matching L1-Russian children, possibly due to using be for more functions (as a topic marker and an inflectional morpheme), as other research has shown for L2-English learners with topic-prominent L1s. Based on the findings, the study discusses some pedagogical implications.

This study intends to review ≪The Subject's Linguistic Theory≫, the 1st volume of the Linguistics Collection, published in 2005 by the Institute of Linguistics at the Academy of Social Sciences. The Linguistics Collection was published with the aim of summing up the achievements of the linguistics research conducted by North Korea after its liberation from Japanese colonial rule, and the fact that ≪The Subject's Linguistic Theory≫ was selected as the 1st volume of this series means that this field is the best manifestation of the nature of North Korean linguistics. This study aims to see how North Korea's language perception differs from or same as ours, and eventually to explore the possibility of mutual communication of linguistic studies conducted in the South and the North. In section 1, it explains the overall purpose of the study, and in section 2, it examines the process in which the North's linguistic theory, called “The Subject's Linguistic Theory,” has been formed, and in section 3, it analyzes the contents of ≪The Subject's Linguistic Theory≫ (2005), published as part of the Linguistics Collection. In section 4, we attempt to present the necessity of meta-linguistics and the role of social linguistics through the theoretical questions that this 'The Subject's Linguistic Theory' poses to us.

This paper focuses on the construction of authentic rapper identities among Korean rappers throughout the history of rap in Korea. The first part of this study describes the historical development of linguistic practices and available linguistic resources that were commonly exercised and exploited by Korean rappers over time, while the latter part demonstrates how those practices and resources become components constituting and constructing various rapper identities through Eckert's (2008) framework of “indexical field.” The exploration of the Korean rappers' linguistic practices reported that Korean rappers have developed a number of creative and innovative practices throughout the history of Korean rap and hip-hop. The second part revealed that Korean rappers' innovations and creative practices have become more and more complicated over time for more sophisticated rapper identity construction and projection.

This paper examines the extended usage of ‘jagi’ to analyze to what extent and in what contexts ‘jagi’ is being used, and assesses the speaker's attitude toward it. Furthermore, this paper discuss the role played by women in the extended usage of ‘jagi’. For the purpose of this study, 117 adult males and females living in Daegu have been surveyed. The results of the survey have been analyzed to identify speakers' knowledge of and attitude toward ‘jagi’. Findings can be summarized as follows. First, ‘jagi’ is used as an intimate term of address for spouses and couples. More recently, it has also been used as a term of address between speaker and listener who are not involved in such relationships. Second, the typical usage of ‘jagi’ is its use among same-age women or lower class female speakers. Third, while many of the users of ‘jagi’ are women, there also are men using it. Fourth, the use of ‘jagi’ by younger speakers when speaking to older interlocutors is not an accepted usage. Fifth, the way men perceive and use ‘jagi’ differs from the way women do. For male speakers, there is no gender distinction between the speaker and the listener when using ‘jagi’, whereas women perceive it as being most commonly used by female speakers. Sixth, the use of ‘jagi’ has been extended from female to male speakers. More specifically, the new usage of the word was first advocated by women, who then played a key role in changing the use of ‘jagi’. The extension of the scope of speakers for ‘jagi’ can be considered within two different dimensions. On the one hand, the use of ‘jagi’ as an equivalent to the second-person pronoun by couples was extended to its usage as a general second-person pronoun by other types of interlocutors. On the other hand, if ‘jagi’ was initially mostly used by and among female speakers, the range of users was extended to male speakers and listeners.

This article aims to examine what kinds of non-linguistic parameters correlate with the variations of the sentence-ending styles used in television news. Specifically, we focus on shifting between Hapsyo-style and Haeyo-style, two dominant kinds uttered in the register, and the variations in Haeyo, based on the results from the analysis of a news corpus. It turned out that whereas the two styles are both used, Haeyo is used much less than Hapsyo in the news. In the use of Haeyo as opposed to Hapsyo, the three different parameters such as the gender of the speaker, the role of the speaker, and the type of the news item are shown to have significant correlations. That is, the values of women, anchors, and the type of news items for specific hearers, have positive correlation to the use of Haeyo, contrary to the values of men, reporters, and the type of news items for abstract hearers. The parameter which have the strongest correlation to the use of Haeyo turned out to be the types of news items, followed by the role of speaker, and the gender of the speaker are shown to be the weakest one. Regarding the variations among the different forms belonging to Haeyo, we examined the diversity of the endings used, with special attention to the proportion of the endings originated from clause-linkers, and it turned out that the role of speaker and the type of news items are significant parameters, among which the former is relatively more relevant.
