        In the present study, physiological activities of hot water extracts and 70% ethanol extracts of three types of medicinal mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus, Cordyceps militaris, and Ganoderma lingzhi) produced in Korea and China were investigated. Both the hot-water and 70% ethanol extracts of H. erinaceus and C. militaris from Korea displayed the highest 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazy radical scavenging activities. Nitrite scavenging activities of hotwater extracts of G. lingzhi from Korea and China (41% and 39%, respectively) were higher than the activities of 70% ethanol extracts. Total polyphenol contents of hot water extracts of H. erinaceus and C. militaris from Korea were higher than those of 70% ethanol extracts. The ethanol extracts of G. lingzhi from Korea displayed the highest total polyphenol content. C. militaris from Korea displayed the highest β-glucan level (45.11%). β-glucan content of H. erinaceus from China (30.87%) was higher than H. erinaceus from Korea (16.94%). The findings indicate that healthy ingredients can be maximally extracted using the optimal solvents for each mushroom. These results will be useful in understanding the difference in physiological activities between the solvents used for the extraction of medicinal mushrooms from Korea and China.

        경기도내 유통되는 식용 버섯류의 방사능 안전성을 확보하기 위해, 버섯 종류별, 원산지별 샘플을 수거하여 방사능 오염도를 분석하였다. 버섯류 10종(표고버섯, 느타리버섯, 새송이버섯, 양송이버섯, 팽이버섯, 상황버섯, 차가버섯, 목이버섯, 영지버섯, 송이버섯) 총 284건을 수거하여 방사능 검사를 수행하였다. 인공방사성물질인 131I, 134Cs 와 137Cs의 방사능 농도는 감마선 측정 장비로 분석하였다. 모든 버섯 샘플에서 131I과 134Cs은 MDA 값 이상에서 검출되지 않았다. 그러나 국내산 204건 중 총 6건(표고버섯 3건, 영지버섯 1건, 송이버섯 2건)에서 137Cs 이 0.21~2.58 Bq/kg 검출되었고, 수입산 80건 중 총 38건 (차가버섯 22건, 상황버섯 14건, 표고버섯 1건, 송이버섯 1건)에서 137Cs이 0.21~53.79 Bq//kg 검출되었다. 그리고 차가버섯을 이용한 가공품 10건에서는 건조 차가버섯에 비해 평균 2배 이상의 137Cs가 검출되었고, 최고 123.79 Bq/ kg이 확인되었다. 이와 같은 결과를 종합하여 볼 때, 식품 안전 확보를 위해 일부 수입 버섯류와 가공품에 대한 방사능검사 강화와 함께 지속적인 모니터링이 필요하다 하겠다.

        느타리버섯 재배에 톱밥으로 많이 사용하고 있는 포플러 및 미송톱밥 대체용으로 산림간벌목인 소나무톱밥을 사용하여 느타리버섯을 재배한 결과 균사 생장량은 배양 18일후 소나무 톱밥 70% 첨가된 배지에서 10.8 cm였고, 대조구인 포플러톱밥+미강(8:2)배지에서는 10.2 cm로 소나무 톱밥 배지에서 균사생장이 조금 빨랐다. 전체적으로 균사생장량은 소나무 톱밥의 첨가량에 관계없이 대조구인 포플러톱밥+미강(8:2)배지와 비슷하였고, 균사밀도도 처리간에 뚜렷한 차이가 없이 높은 밀도를 보였다. 자실체의 갓 직경과 대 굵기는 소나무 톱밥이 첨가된 배지에서 조금 낮은 경향을 보였으며, 대와 갓의 경도는 소나무 톱밥 20%와 30% 첨가배지에서 조금 높았다. 대의 색도를 측정한 결과 L값은 소나무톱밥 첨가배지에서 높은 경향을 보였지만, a, b 값은 처리간에 뚜렷한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 병당 수량은 대조구가 157 g/850 ml였고, 소나무 톱밥 40% 첨가에서는 170 g/850 ml으로 가장 높은 수량을 보였다. 또한 느타리버섯의 수량과 생육특성을 고려할 때 소나무 톱밥을 20% 이상 첨가하여도 수량에는 전혀 지장이 없었다. 이와 같이 느타리재배에서 산림간벌목인 소나무를 바로 느타리버섯재배에 이용하여도 수량이나 품질에 큰 차이가 없었다. 따라서 산림간벌목인 소나무가 느타리재배에 사용하는 포플러나 미송의 대체 배지재료로 충분할 것으로 판단된다.

        This study was conducted to optimize the level of sugar added (20 (control), 15, 10, 5%) during the preparation of soy sauce-salted mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii) jangachi without affecting the degree of preference. The salinity and sugar content during storage of soy sauce-salted mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii) jangachi decreased significantly as the level of sugar added decreased. The moisture content was found to increase as the level of sugar added decreased. Additionally, the pH increased, while hardness decreased as the level of sugar added decreased during 3 weeks of storage. The L value (lightness) was not different from that of the control group until the addition of 10% sugar, while the a value (redness) and b value (yellowness) increased. The antioxidant activity of vitamin C content and DPPH radical scavenging activity increased as sugar content decreased. Upon sensory evaluation of mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii) jangachi, the highest value in appearance was observed for the 5 and 15% treatments, while 5% had the highest flavor value, 15 and 10% had the highest taste values, 10 and 15% had the highest texture values, the control and 5% had the greatest clarification values, and the 15 and 10% groups had the greatest overall acceptance. These results suggest that a sugar level of 15% can be used without significantly affecting the overall acceptance.

        주왕산국립공원 내 자생버섯 자원의 서식지별 관리방안을 수립하고 생물다양성, 생태계다양성을 유지하기 위한 기초자료를 제공하기 위해서 2017년 4월부터 10월까지 7개월 동안 버섯조사를 실시하였다. 총 조사된 버섯은 2문, 8강, 21목, 85과 225속, 503분류군이 조사되었다. 분류군별로 보면 주름버섯목이 247분류군으로 48.8%의 분포를 보였으며, 구멍장이버섯목과 무당버섯목이 뒤를 이어 다수 발생하는 종으로 확인되었다. 8월에 가장 많은 종이 출현하였고 해발고도 300- 400m 사이에서 가장 많은 분포를 보였는데 이 중 상의지구, 대전사 인근지역과, 거대리 샘골 지역에서 가장 많은 버섯 종류가 조사되었다. 기후변화지표종 중 큰갓버섯과 노루털버섯(능이)이 출현하였다.

        The Pleurotus tuoliensis is a mushroom named Chinese ‘Bai-Ling-Gu’ from species of Pleurotus nebrodensis. we are mated for selection of cytoplasmic hybrid by mitochondria microsatellite marker and the method of Mon-Mon mating between monokaryotic strains derived from Pleurotus ferula ASI 0629 (Beesan No.1) and Pleurotus tuoliensis ASI 0663 (Baekryung 20). The cytoplasmic hybrids were identified 8 strains contained nuclear DNA bands of 'Baekryung 20' and mitochondrial DNA of monokaryon strains derived from Pleurotus ferula ASI 0629 (beesan No.1). The KiMB-Plft-15-81 was shown the best cultural characteristics, selected to be a new cultivar and designed as 'Baekwhang'. The 'Baekwhang' cab be grown without an extra after-ripening period, can utilize bottle cultivation of Pleurotus eryngii. And also the ‘Seolwon’ is similar to the existing Pleurotus tuoliensis in shape and physiological characteristics, formed high stipe. We therefore expect that this new strains will substitutional goods of Pleurotus eryngii.

        Mushrooms have been valued as a traditional source of natural bioactive compounds for centuries and have recently been exploited for potential components in cosmetics industry. Numerous mushrooms and their ingredients have been known to be beneficial to the skin and hair. The representative ingredients are as follows: phenolics, polyphenolics, terpenoids, selenium, polysaccharides, vitamins and volatile organic compounds. These compounds show excellent antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, skin whitening, and moisturizing effects which make them ideal candidates for cosmetics products. This review provides some perspectives of mushrooms (and/or extracts) and their ingredients presently used, or patented to be used, in both cosmeceuticals for topical administration and nutricosmetics for oral administration. With the small percentage of mushrooms presently identified and utilized, more mushroom species will be discovered, verified, and cultivated in the future, boosting the development of relevant industry. Combining with progress in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and systems pharmacology, mushrooms can find their way into cosmetics with multiple approaches.

        Honey production from approximately 1.7 million colonies owned by around 21 thousand beekeepers was almost 36 thousand M/T in Korea. Pollen has used as a food and medicine from before the Joseon Dynasty period in Korea. Pollen grains such as acorn (Quercus acutissima), actinidia (Actinidia arguta) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) are popular in the markets in Korea. But stiff pollen wall hindered dissolution of polysaccharides and lowered extraction efficiency. In the present study, we measured the antioxidant activity and the total polyphenol content from the pulverized and lyophilized green tea pollen grains inoculated with 6 kinds of fungi to confirm the husk removal effect. The total polyphenol content of green tea pollens was highest in lyophilized pollen medium inoculated with Armillaria mellea, and was lowest in pollen inoculated with Lentinula edodes. Total polyphenol content of the lyophilized pollen was higher than that of the refined pollen and the pulverized pollen in green tea pollen germinated with A. mellea. The total polyphenol content of the lyophilized green tea pollens germinated with A. mellea was 1.4-fold higher than that extracted with water. Measurement of antioxidant activity using the DPPH free radical scavenging method showed that the lyophilized green tea pollen grains germinated with A. mellea had the highest and that germinated with L. edodes was lowest in antioxidant activities. The lyophilized green tea pollen grains germinated with A. mellea was 2 to 4 times higher than that extracted with water in the antioxidant activity of DPPH free radical scavenging. Many germinated cells were formed around pore of green tea pollen inoculated with L. edodes, while those were formed at the end of hyphae derived from green tea pollen grains inoculated with A. mellea.

        In the present study, four edible mushrooms, Lentinula edodes, Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus ostreatus, and Pleurotus eryngii, were air-dried or freeze-dried for a certain period of time. After finely ground the materials, their beta-glucan contents were measured. Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide of plant and fungal cell wall and also a dietary fiber. It has an effect on stimulating immune cells and decreasing cholesterol. In the mushroom materials used in this study, beta-glucan contents were measured as 11-16%. Among them, P. ostreatus represented the highest contents, 16%. The authors also examined the contents of polyphenol, which is a phenolic compound known to have antioxidant activity. The polyphenol concentrations of the selected mushrooms were measured in 1 mg/ml of each sample prepared by hot-air drying and freeze-drying, respectively. As a result, 28-32 mg/ml of polyphenol was measured in hot air dried samples of P. ostreatus. In P. eryngii, air-dried samples had 6 mg/ml more polyphenols than freeze-dried ones, while in P. ostreatus, the former had 10 mg/ml more than the latter, indicating that the polyphenol contents in mushrooms can be changed by the different drying treatments. In other words, for P. eryngii and P. ostreatus, hot-air drying is more suitable processing method than freeze-drying in the light of physiological activity.

        Research on the useful mushroom was done at Aurora Memorial National Park (AMNP). The Park is situated in Central Luzon Region with a total land area of 5,676 hectares. AMNP has no distinct wet and dry season thus provides a favorable climate, which promotes the growth of useful mushrooms. The photo-documentation and collections were performed to assess diversity. Five Transect Lines (TL) were laid out in five areas, with 20m x 30m quadrat and interval of 100 meters between quadrats. The study resulted in the identification of 36 families, 53 genera, and 104 species of which 97 are basidiomycetes and 6 are ascomycetes. Simpson’s and Shannon diversity indexes resulted in 0.7254 and 1.4295, respectively. In both indexes, useful mushrooms at AMNP showed moderately diverse. While the evenness revealed 0.1565 indicating low species evenness in each TL. Among the significant findings revealed two new possible new species of Microporus and Cymatoderma.

        Occurrence spontaneous mushrooms in eastern Jeju Muryeongarioreum, Sillyecheon-Iseungak, Kyoraegotjawal, Geomunoreum were examined in 2016. The collected mushrooms were classified by 15 order 56 family 149 genera 317 species. Among the collected mushrooms, 87 species of mushrooms were successfully incubated in mushroom complete medium in which DNA of 25 species were completely extracted and amplified using universal primers ITS1 (5’-CTTG GTCA TTTA GAGG AAGT AA-3’) and ITS4 (5’-TCCT CCGC TTAT TGAT ATGC-3’). Four species of them were differently identified between the classification by morphological observation and by analysis of DNA sequences i.e. by morphological identification Ganoderma applanatum, Armillaria gallica, Macrolepiota procera and Trametes gibbosa were identified as G. gibbosum, A. cepistipes, M. detersa and T. elegans by analysis of DNA sequences, respectively. Based on these results both identification ways might be necessary for correct classification of mushrooms. On the other hand, among the collected 317 mushrooms, 48 species could be identified to genus but not to species by the morphological observations. However, by the analysis of DNA sequences, 15 species were identified to species in which 6 species were unregistered mushrooms in Korea. Therefore, the analysis of DNA sequence may be useful to identify the mushrooms which are difficult to recognize by morphological observation.

        Oyster mushrooms are popular and physiologically beneficial to human health. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of oyster mushrooms such as Pleurotus ostreatus, P. pulmonarius, and P. citrinopileatus on high cholesterol fed rats. Five-week old female Sprague-Dawley albino rats were divided into three groups of 8 rats each. Feeding a diet containing a 5% fruiting body powder of Pleurotus species to high cholesterol fed rats reduced plasma total cholesterol (TG), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Feeding each oyster mushroom also significantly reduced body weight in high cholesterol fed rats. However, it had no adverse effects on plasma albumin, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, glucose, total protein or enzyme profiles such as glutamate oxalate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) which are related to kidney function. Feeding each mushroom increased total lipid and cholesterol excretion in feces. A histological study of hepatic cells by conventional red O staining showed normal findings in mushroom-fed hyperlipidemic rats. These results suggested that diet supplementation of 5% fruiting body power of Pleurotus species provided health benefits by acting on the atherogenic lipid profile in high cholesterol fed rats.

        Molecular genetic approaches have advantages in investigating various physiological aspects of mushrooms. We have been engaged in developing genetic transformation system mainly in wood rot mushrooms. In this presentation, our recent trials to accelerate mushroom science beyond the post-genomic era will be presented. They include development of research tools both in forward and reverse genetics; a transfection system and its utilization in gene expression signal analysis in the selective white rot fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, multiple gene targeting system in Pleurotus ostreatus and Coprinopsis cinerea, which was used to do knock-out or knock-in of reporter constructs on the chromosome of these fungi, and a “powered” forward genetics combined with genome information was used to identify new gene responsible for lignin-degradation in P. ostreatus. They may contribute to elucidate uncovered molecular mechanisms in unique processes in the mushrooms and to make them as a new industrial tool in the next era. Furthermore, our recent results in on-going genome editing experiments will be also reported.

        The fruiting bodies of Sanghwang mushrooms, Phellinus linteus HN1009K (PLH) and Phellinus linteus (Korea Sanghwang, PLK), and Phellinus baumii (Jangsu Sangwhang, PB), were extracted with 70% methanol. The methanolic extracts of different concentrations (5–200 μg/ml) showed inhibitory effects of 20–95% on plated aggregation induced by collagen (2.5 ug/ml), ADP (10 uM), and thrombin (0.1 U/ml). The PLH, PLK, and PB extracts (200 ug/ml) reduced ATP release from ADP-activated platelets by 50¬60%. These results suggest that the methanolic extracts from Sanghwang mushrooms inhibit platelet aggregation.

        This study was carried out to develop the technology to manage the growth of mushrooms, which were cultivated based on long-term information obtained from quantified data. In this study, hardware that monitored and controlled the growth environment of the mushroom cultivation house was developed. An algorithm was also developed to grow mushrooms automatically. Environmental management for the growth of mushrooms was carried out using cultivation sites, computers, and smart phones. To manage the environment of the mushroom cultivation house, the environmental management data from farmers cultivating the highest quality mushrooms in Korea were collected and a growth management database was created. On the basis of the database value, the management environment for the test cultivar (hukthali) was controlled at 0.5 °C with 3–7% relative humidity and 10% carbon dioxide concentration. As a result, it was possible to produce mushrooms that were almost similar to those cultivated in farms with the best available technology.

        This study aimed to investigate antioxidant activity of various extracts from fruiting bodies and mycelia of two Phellinus linteus strains and P. baumii. The Phellinus strains have cultivated on oak and mulberry logs. The fruiting bodies species were harvested from each Phellinus strain and used in this study. The tested items include: 2, 2’-azinobis[3-ethylbenzthiazoline]-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), free radical scavenging assay and determination of total phenolics contents (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), and DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activities. Different extractions with 60% Ethyl alcohol, 70% methyl alcohol and heat water were done on the mycellial and fruiting bodies samples of the mushroom species. The methyl alcohol extraction from fruiting body of P. linteus KACC93057P displayed the highest antioxidant activity on ABTS, FRAP, and DPPH assays. The ethyl acetate fraction was concentrated and subjected to an ODS column chromatography, followed by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Finally six compounds 1-6 were detected by preparative reversed-phase HPLC.

        Molecular markers were crucial role in understanding and using genomic information for marker-assisted breeding, mapping genes of interest and cloning genes. Among the molecular markers, Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) has became increasingly important marker due to their co-dominant and high polymorphic nature and abundant distribution throughout the genome. Simple sequence repeats (SSR), also called “microsatellites” consist of tandemly repeated short DNA sequence motifs and have applied in various marker-based studies. SSRs were isolated and characterized from “Heuktari” and “Miso”, which are one of the major oyster mushroom cultivars in Korea by the genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. The genome sizes of “Heuktari” were 40.8 Mb and “Miso” were estimated to be 40.3 Mb, which were larger than the other P.ostreatus species (PC9 and PC10) and less than P.eryngii (KNR2312 P5). A total of 949 and 968 SSRs were found in the “Heuktari” and “Miso” genomes, respectively. A comparative analysis of five mushrooms including P.ostreatus var. florida (PC9 and PC15), P.eryngii, revealed that SSR numbers from “Heuktari” and “Miso” were the highest among them. Studied all mushrooms showed similar pattern of SSR distributions. Tri-, hexa- and octanucleotide motifs accounted for the top three fractions of all SSRs.
