        PURPOSES : The evaluation of the low-temperature performance of an asphalt mixture is crucial for mitigating transverse thermal cracking and preventing traffic accidents on expressways. Engineers in pavement agencies must identify and verify the pavement sections that require urgent management. In early 2000, the research division of the Korea Expressway Corporation developed a three-dimensional (3D) pavement condition monitoring profiler vehicle (3DPM) and an advanced infographic (AIG) highway pavement management system computer program. Owing to these efforts, the management of the entire expressway network has become more precise, effective, and efficient. However, current 3DPM and AIG technologies focus only on the pavement surface and not on the entire pavement layer. Over the years, along with monitoring, further strengthening and verification of the feasibility of current 3DPM and AIG technologies by performing extensive mechanical tests and data analyses have been recommended. METHODS : First, the pavement section that required urgent care was selected using the 3DPM and AIG approaches. Second, asphalt mixture cores were acquired from the specified section, and a low-temperature fracture test, semi- circular bending (SCB) test, was performed. The mechanical parameters, energy-release rate, and fracture toughness were computed and compared. RESULTS : As expected, the asphalt mixture cores acquired from the specified pavement section ( poor condition – bad section) exhibited negative fracture performances compared to the control section (good section). CONCLUSIONS : The current 3DPM and AIG approaches in KEC can successfully evaluate and analyze selected pavement conditions. However, more extensive experimental studies and mathematical analyses are required to further strengthen and upgrade current pavement analysis approaches.

        PURPOSES : The numeric-based Highway Pavement Management System (HPMS), along with an advanced three-dimensional pavement condition monitoring profiler vehicle (3DPM), in South Korea has presented remarkable advancements in pavement management since the early 2000. Based on these results, visual distress on pavement surfaces can be easily detected and analyzed. Additionally, the entire expressway pavement surface conditions in South Korea can be easily monitored using the current graphical user interface-based advanced information graphic (AIG) approach. Therefore, a critically negative pavement section can be detected and managed more easily and efficiently. However, the actual mechanical performance of the selected pavement layer still needs to be investigated in a more thorough manner not only to provide more accurate pavement performance results but also to verify the feasibility of the current 3DPM and AIG approaches. In this study, the low-temperature performance of the selected asphalt pavement layer section was evaluated to further verify and strengthen the feasibility of the current 3DPM and AIG approaches developed by the Korea Expressway Corporation. METHODS : Based on 3DPM and AIG approach, the positive and negative-riding-quality road sections were selected, respectively. The asphalt material cores were extracted from each section then bending beam rheometer mixture creep test was performed to measure their low-temperature properties. Based on the experimental results, thermal stress results were computed and visually compared. RESULTS : As expected, the asphalt material from the negative driving performance section presented a poorer low-temperature cracking resistance than that from the positive driving performance section. CONCLUSIONS : Current 3DPM equipment can successfully evaluate expressway surface conditions and the corresponding material performance quality. However, more extensive experimental studies are recommended to verify and strengthen the findings of this study

        한국 남해안 금호열도 주변 다도해역의 조류특성과 해수순환 구조를 파악하기 위해 대조와 소조시 ADCP bottom tracking을 이 용한 25시간 선박 항주관측을 실시하였다. 대조시 낙조와 창조 방향은 남동-북서이며, 최강유속은 표층 약 40 cm/s이다. 개도주변은 지형적 특성으로 주변해역의 탁월유향과 다르고, 유향·유속의 분산이 크다. 전 구간 표~저층 흐름에 두드러진 경압모드 성분은 없었다. 이는 좁은 수로와 얕은 수심, 빠른 유속으로 지형성와류나 eddy로 인한 연직혼합이 활발했음을 나타낸다. 소조시 조류는 남남동-북북서, 평균유속은 대조의 85 %이다. 탁월유향은 대조보다 우세하지 못하고 지속시간도 짧다. 흐름은 연직방향 유속시어, 수평와류, 비대칭 조류혼합으로 물질의 수평·연직이동이 왕성할 것으로 추정된다. 일평균조류는 개도 서~북서 수로해역이 북서~북동, 금오도 서쪽은 서남서~남남서 방향 최 대 21 cm/s의 흐름이 존재한다. 소리도 서쪽에는 좌선환류나 와류가 형성되었다.

        본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 추풍령 기상관측소에서 연직바람관측장비와 레윈존데 간 풍속 자료의 유효화를 통 해 연직바람관측장비의 운영 프로그램인 PCL 1300 내 일관성 검사와 관련된 매개변수를 최적화하는 것이다. 그런 다음 2009년 3월부터 2010년 2월까지 맑은 날과 강수 발생일에 대한 난류 에너지 감소률의 특성(ε )을 분석하는 것이다. 2010년 4월 22일부터 4월 23일까지 레윈존데와 연직바람관측장비의 바람 관측 자료를 비교한 결과, 동서(u) 성분과 남 북(v) 성분의 바람에서 고도 3,000 m 이후에서 10 ms−1 이상의 큰 차이를 나타내었다. 두 기기 사이 u 성분과 v 성분의 바람에 대한 풍속 차가 10 ms−1를 넘는 경우를 제외할 경우 두 바람 성분에 대한 상관계수는 각각 0.92와 0.88이었고, 제곱근 평균 오차는 각각 3.07 ms−1과 1.06 ms−1이었다. 이들 결과에 준하여 PCL1300 프로그램의 자료 처리 시간을 30 분으로 조정하고, 최소 이용 자료는 전체의 60%로 조정할 경우가 비교적 작은 편의를 나타내었다. 한편 PCL1300 운영 프로그램에서 u, v 성분의 일관성 검사에 대한 민감도 분석 결과, 시선속도 일관성, 동시성, 풍속 일관성 검사에서 u 성 분에 대해서는 과소평가 되었고, 반면 v 성분에 대해서는 과대평가 되었다. 최종적으로 PCL1300 운영 프로그램의 최적 화를 통해 맑은 날과 강수 발생일의 난류 에너지 감소률(ε )을 분석한 결과, 각 고도에서 ε의 일별 및 계절별 평균은 강수 발생일이 맑은 날에 비해 높게 나타났는데, 이는 상승하강 기류에 따른 연직속도가 증가하였기 때문이다. 그리고 맑은 날과 강수 발생일 모두 계절별 ε 평균은 겨울이 낮게 나타났는데, 이는 겨울이 다른 계절에 비해 수평 풍속이 강 했기 때문이다. 결과적으로 연직속도가 ±10 cm s−1 이상에 해당하는 맑은 날과 강수 발생일의 ε 값을 제외할 경우 강수 발생일은 맑은 날에 비해 약 6-7배 ε이 높게 나타났으며, 연직속도를 모두 고려할 경우는 약 4-5배 더 높게 나타났다.

        ADCPs have been widely used to estimate the dynamic characteristics and biomass of sound scattering layers (SSLs), and swimming speed of fish schools for analyzing SSLs spatial distribution and/or various behavior patterns. This result showed that the verification of the mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS or averaged SV, dB) acquired by the ADCP would be necessary for a quantitative analysis on the spatial distribution and the biomass estimation of the SSLs or fish school when ADCP is used for estimating their biomass. In addition, the calibrated sphere method was used to verify values of each MVBS obtained from 4 beams of ADCP (153.6 kHz) on the base of 3 frequencies (38, 120, 200 kHz) of Scientific echo sounder's split beam system. Then, the measured SV values were compared and analyzed in its Target Strength (TS, dB) values estimated by a theoretical acoustic scattering model.

        PURPOSES : Skid resistance and noise of roads highly depend on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information for the skid resistance and noise of road. Generally, Sand Patch Test is performed in order to estimate MTD(Mean Texture Depth). However, it is time-consuming and needs traffic control. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of measurement texture depth using the Portable Laser Profiler that give the MPD(Mean Profile Depth). METHODS : MTD and MPD were collected on the number of expressway sections including Central Inland Test Road sections in Korea. Statistical analysis are performed to establish the relationship between MTD data based on Sand Patch Test and MPD data obtained by the Portable Laser Profiler. RESULTS : Linear relationship MPD and MTD is observed for both of asphalt pavement and concrete pavement such as R-square of 0.51 to 0.58. CONCLUSIONS : Even though, the test method and definition of MPD and MTD are different. EMTD(Estimated Mean Texture Depth) can be obtained by using the correlationship between MPD with MTD.

        Green strength is an important property of powders since high green strength guarantees easy and safe handling before sintering. The green strength of a powder compact is related to mainly mechanical and surface characters, governed by interlocking of the particles. In this study, the effect of powder surface roughness on the green strength of iron powders was investigated using a transverse rupture test. Three-dimensional laser profiler was employed for quantitative analyses of the surface roughness. Two different surface conditions, i.e. surface roughness, of powders were compared. The powders having rough surfaces show higher green strength than the round surface powders since higher roughness leads increasing interlocked area between the contacting powders.

        This study shows that the vertical migration speed of sound scattering layers (SSLs), which is distributed in near Funka Bay, were measured by 3D velocity components acquired from a bottom moorng ADCP. While the bottom mooring type has a problem to measure the velocity vectors of sound scattering layer distributed near to surface, both the continuous vertical migration patterns and variability of backscatterers were routinely investigated as well. In addition, the velocity vectors were compared with the vertical migration velocity estimated from echograms of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength, and estimated to produce observational bias due to SSLs which is composed of backscatterers such as euphausiids, nekton, and fishes have swimming ability.

        This study was performed to estimate the swimming velocity of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) migrated offshore Funka Bay of Hokkaido using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (OceanSurveyor, RDI, 153.6kHz) established in T/S Ushio-maru of Hokkaido University, in September 27, 2003. The ADCP's doppler shift revealed as the raw data that the maximum swimming velocity was measured 163.0cm/s, and its horizontal swimming speed and direction were 72.4±24.1 cm/s, 160.1˚±22.3˚ while the surrounding current speed and direction were 19.6±8.4 cm/s, 328.1˚±45.3˚. To calculate the actual swimming speed of Pacific saury in each bins, comparisons for each stratified bins must be made between the mean surrounding current velocity vectors, measured for each stratified bin, and its mean swimming velocity vectors, assumed by reference (threshold 〉 -70dB) and 5dB margin among four beams of ADCP. As a result, the actual averaged swimming velocity was 88.6cm/s and the averaged 3-D swimming velocity was 91.3cm/s using the 3-D velocity vector, respectively.

        A minimum threshold for the signal to noise ratio (SNRmin) has to be set in the data processing system of wind profiler radar (WPR). The data collection rate and the accuracy of the WPR wind vector depend on the SNRmin. The WPR at Uljin is operated with an SNRmin of 1 dB which is a relatively large threshold. We found that the accuracy and the continuity of the WPR wind vector with height were directly related to the variability of the SNR and vertical gradient of the squared refractive index. We investigated a quantitative method for determining a new SNRmin for the WPR at Uljin and it was evaluated with radiosonde data. The accuracy and continuity of the wind vector from an SNR of less than 1 dB, began to decrease at an altitude of 3.5 km. Most of the SNR values were less than –3.5 dB in altitudes higher than 3.5 km. We retrieved high-accuracy wind vectors at altitudes over 3 km where measurements were deficient with an SNRmin of 1 dB.

        Ground echo is radar return from stationary targets such as buildings and trees. Wind vectors from the wind profile radar in Gangneung are affected by ground echoes due to the complex mountainous terrain located to the west and the south. These ground echoes make a spurious peak close to the direct current (DC) line signal in Doppler spectra. Wind vectors polluted by ground clutters were determined from spectra of oblique beams. After eliminated the terrain echoes, the accuracy of wind vector compared with radiosonde was improved about 68.4% and its relative coefficient was increased from 0.58 to 0.97.

        Wind profiler provides vertical profiles of three-dimensional wind vectors with high spatiotemporal resolution. The wind vectors is useful to analyze severe weather phenomena and to validate the various products from numerical weather prediction model. However, the wind measurements are not immune to ground clutter, bird, insect, and aircraft. Therefore, quality of wind vectors from wind profiler must be quantitatively evaluated prior to its application. In this study, wind vectors from UHF wind profiler at Ganwon Regional Meteorological Administration was quantitatively evaluated using 27 radiosonde measurements that were launched every two or three hours according to rainfall intensity during Intensive Observation Period (IOP) from June to July 2013. In comparison between two measurements, wind vectors from wind profiler was relatively underestimated. In addition, the accuracy and quality of wind vectors from wind profiler decrease with increasing beam height. The accuracy and quality of the wind vectors for rainy periods during IOP were higher than for the clear-air measurements. The moderate rainfall intensity lead to multi-peaks in Doppler spectrum. It results in overestimation of vertical air motion, whereas wind vectors from wind profilers shows good agreement with those from radiosonde measurements for light rainfall intensity.

        본 연구에서는 국내 기술로 개수로 흐름 측정에 활용할 수 있는 초음파 유속 프로파일러를 개발하였다. 이 유속 프로파일러는 초음파의 도플러 효과로 유속을 측정하는 원리에 기반을 두고 있으며, 도플러 주파수는 펄스반복주파수(Pulse Repetition Frequency) 기법에 의해 산정된다. 개발된 유속 프로파일러의 성능을 검증하기 위해 실내 실험 및 현장 테스트를 수행하였다. 실험 결과 개발된 유속 프로파일러는 바닥에서부터 약 0.1 cm 이상의 수심

        The effects of high-resolution wind profiler (HWP) data on the wind distributions were evaluated in two different coastal areas during the study period (23-26 August, 2007), indicating weak-gradient flows. The analysis was performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with a three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. For the comparison purpose, two coastal regions were selected as: a southwestern coastal (SWC) region characterized by a complex shoreline and a eastern coastal (EC) region surrounding a simple coastline and high mountains. The influence of data assimilation using the HWP data on the wind distributions in the SWC region was moderately higher than that of the EC region. In comparison between the wind speed and direction in the two coastal areas, the application of the HWP data contributed to improvement of the wind direction distribution in the SWC region and the wind strength in the EC region, respectively. This study suggests that the application of the HWP data exerts a large impact on the change in wind distributions over the sea and thus can contribute to the solution to lack of satellite and buoy data with their observational uncertainty.
