1984년 4월에서 10월까지 억새의 생육, 계절별 생산량 및 재생특성(再生特性)을 연구한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 억새의 잎은 Kranz anatomy를 갖고 있으며 두 종류의 엽록체를 갖는 전형적인 C4 식물이다. 2 억새의 계절별(季節別) 생산량(生産量)은 6월에서 8월 사이에 급격한 증가를 보이고 10월에 최고에 달하였으며 (1,680gdw/m2), 생산성은 7월에 510gdw/m2로 가장 높았고 그 후 점차 감소하였다
