농촌진흥청 원예특작과학원에서는 수출 및 국내 소비 확대를 위한 황색계 중형 품종을 육성할 목적으로 1995년에 황색계 중 소형종 C. ‘Golden Color’와 순노랑색계 중형종 ‘Eastern Star’ 품종을 교배하여 2008년에 황색계 중, 소형종 ‘프리티 옐로’(Cymbidium ‘Pretty Yellow’) 신품종을 개발하였다. 1995년부터 2007년까지 종자기내파종, 온실양성, 선발 그리고 특성검정으로 균일성, 안정성, 화색, 화수, 엽형 등이 우수하여 2008년 12월 농작물 직무육성 심의회를 거쳐 ‘Pretty Yellow’ 로 명명하였다. ‘Pretty Yellow’ 품종은 연한 오렌지색계 (O25A)의 설판에 연두색 빛이 도는 노랑색계 바탕색(RHS, Y13A)이며, 1개 꽃대에 14개의 소화가 착생하며 화폭이 약 5.9cm이다. 꽃모양은 꽃받침과 꽃잎이 안쪽으로 약간 오므라든 모양의 안아피기형으로 둥글고, 꽃대는 반직립성이며 식물체 크 기는 중소형이다. 꽃은 보통재배 시 1월 중순경부터 개화하는 중, 만생종이며 개화수명은 15-18oC에서 관리시 2개월 정도 유 지된다. 잎 형태는 꼬임이 적은 직립성이고 꽃대의 길이는 41.9cm로 짧은편이며 국내 소비자 기호성이 높다.
Cymbidium ‘Pretty Yellow’ was developed in 2008 from a cross between hybrids at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration. In 1995, a cross was made between C. ‘Golden Color’, a yellow colored flower with yellow spotted lip of medium and small plant type as maternal line, and C. ‘Eastern Star’ a pure yellow colored flower with yellow lip of medium type, as paternal line. Then in vitro seed germination, cultivation, selection, and characteristic trials were conducted from 1996 to 2007. The line was named as Wongyo ‘F1-24’ and its phenotype was characterized as a new cultivar in 2007. The ‘Pretty Yellow’ has light green basal color (RHS, Y13A) on both sepal and petal and a light orange spotted lip (RHS, O25A). It has about 14.0 flowers per stalk and a flower size of 5.9 cm. Its petals and sepals have an incurved shape. This hybrid has short semi-erect peduncle 44.3 cm in length. The plant size is small to medium with a semi-erect leaf attitude and vigorous growth. Blooming started from the middle of January (mid and late winter) under optimal culture conditions. The longevity of the potted flower was about 2 months at 15-18oC. We expect that ‘Pretty Yellow’ to have a great potential for the domestic market.
