본 논문에서는 단파의 파군이 계단형 지형을 통과할 때 발생하는 2차 장파를 이론적으로 연구하였다. 먼저, 수심 변화에 의한 단파의 회절을 해석하였으며, 다변수 섭동법을 이용하여 2차 장파의 지배방정식을 유도하였다. 2차 장파 방정식을 해석하여 서로 다른 속도로 진행하는 자유장파와 구속장파가 발생함을 보였다.
