한반도의 점토대토기문화는 점토대토기와 파수부호, 청동기·철기, 유구석부 등의 유물조합에 의해 다섯 단계로 나눌 수 있다. 그 중 1단계는 한반도에 점토대토기가 처음 등장하는 시기로 중국 동북지방 凉泉文化와 춘추시대 정치적 상황을 고려하여 기원전 5세기대로 볼 수 있다. 한국식동검이 등장하는 3단계는 기원전 4세기대로, 전국계철기와 삼각형점토대토기가 등장하는 4단계는 기원전2세기대가 중심이다. 또 와질토기와 다량의 철기가 보이는 5단계는 기원전 1세기대가 중심이 된다. 한편 점토대토기와 함께 한반도에 전개되는 초기철기문화의 사회문화적 변동은 점토대토기문화가 기존 청동기문화의 연속이라기보다 새로운 패러다임의 문화임을 역설하고 있다. 따라서 기존의 송국리유형까지만을 청동기시대로 보아 청동기시대는 조기(미사리유형)-전기(가락동,역삼동유형)-후기(송국리유형)로 나눌 수 있다. 한편 본고에서 설정한 점토대토기문화 중 1,2단계는 송국리유형과 같은 시기로 볼 수 있으며, 5단계는 원삼국문화와 중첩된다. 따라서 초기철기시대는 앞서 살펴본 5단계 중 3단계와 4단계만을 지칭할 수 있으며 철대연대로는 기원전 4~2세기의 약 300년의 기간이다.

Roll-Rimmed Pottery culture in Korean Peninsula can be divided into 5 subphases according todifferences in assemblages constituted of several kind of roll-rimmed vessels, jar with handles,bronze implements, iron implement, and grooved adze. In the earliest subphase, roll-rimmedpottery first appeared in the Korean peninsula. Considering the political circumstances of north-eastern China in Spring-Autumn Period, and its similarity with Liangquan[凉泉] culture, the phasecan be dated to the 5th century B.C. The third one, during which the Korean-style bronze daggernewly appeared, can be dated to the 4th century B.C. The fourth one witnessed broad spread ofiron technology following Warring States style and triangular roll-rimmed pottery and can bedated to the 2nd century B.C. Finally, the fifth one that was characterized by 'emergence of wajil(soft gray) pottery and drastic increment of iron implements, was the 1st century B.C. The emergence of roll-rimmed pottery assemblage accompanied with iron culture means theend of Bronze Age, which is broken into 3 phases: the Early (Misari style), Middle (Garakdong,Yeoksamdong style) and Late (Songgukri style). The first and second subphases of roll-rimmedpottery culture, overlapped with some part of Late Bronze Age and the fifth one phase over-lapped with Proto-Three Kingdoms Period. Thus Early Iron Age coincides with the third andfourth phases of Roll-Rimmed Pottery culture and spanned about 300 years, from the fourth tosecond century B.C.
