본 연구는 일본에서는 높게 평가되는 인물이지만 Hamel에 이어 한국을 서양에 알린 두 번째 인물임에도 불구하고 한국지도학계에서는 별로 주목을 받지 못한 Siebold의 일생과 업적에 대하여 고찰한 것이다. 특히 의사인 동시에 지도학자 혹은 지역연구가로서의 Siebold가 어떤 삶을 살았으며, 그의 출생부터 학창시절의 자료를 검토함으로써 사회·문화적 배경을 고찰해 보았다. 그 결과, Siebold는 의사 가문에서 성장하였으나 외삼촌의 영향을 받아 다방면에 걸쳐 지적 호기심을 가지고 노력하여 의학자․식물학자․지도학자․지역학자가 될 수 있었다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 또한 그가 재작성한 ｢일본변계약도｣에는 울릉도와 독도를 한국령으로표시하였고, ｢朝鮮全圖｣는 한국에서 제작된 지도가 16세기 경 일본으로 전달되어 1785년 하야시[林]에 의해 모사된 된 것이 일본 국내에 유포된 타미야[田宮]의 ｢朝鮮八道之圖｣일 가능성이 크다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. Siebold가 제작한 ｢일본지도｣는 유럽 지도에울릉도와 독도를 혼동하게 만든 계기가 되었다.
This study investigates life and achievement of Siebold who has not been widely recognized in Korean cartographicsociety even though he introduced Korea to the west only after Hamel. In particular, this study considers Siebold’s lifeas a doctor, cartographer, and regional specialist and corresponding his social and cultural background by examiningdocuments from birth through school periods. The result shows that Siebold was born and raised under the influenceof doctor family. However, his uncle inspired him to study various fields, and he became a doctor, botanist, cartographer,and regional specialist after all. In particular, he regenerated ‘Map of Japan and Neighboring Countries’ where Ulleungdoand Dokdo were marked as Korean territory. In addition, ‘Chosun-jundo’, made by Siebold also, suggests strong possibility of Korean maps’ influence to Tamiya’s ‘Chosun-paldojido’. Reflected by ‘Chosun-jundo’, Korean maps were diffused to Japan in 16th century and imitated by Hayashi in 1785, and the imitated map were most likely distributed as Tamiya’s ‘Chosun-paldojido’. Seibold’s ‘Map of Japan’ brought confusion to European cartographic societies differentiating Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
