엘리엇은 몇몇 낭만주의 시인들에 대하여 자신의 견해를 밝힌바 있다. 이 글은 엘리엇이 1937년에 작성한 ｢바이런｣을 중심으로 엘리엇의 바이런에 대한 평가의 내용을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 엘리엇은 바이런의 생애는 비교적 설명이 되어 밝혀졌지만 그의 문학적 특징은 생애에 비해 설명되지 않았다며 그가 이 일을 수행하겠다고 주장한다. 그러면서 엘리엇은 우선 작품의 양과 질에 대한 관계로 관심을 돌리며 바이런의 경우 양적인 측면은 한계를 규정짓기가 난해하지만 질적인 측면은 우수하다고 한다. 그러나 시인으로서의 바이런의 경우, 단시는 물론 장시에 있어서도 바이런이 우수하다고 평가한다. 또한 바이런의 악마주의를 지목하며 엘리엇은 이것이 복합적 특성을 지니고 있다고 평가한다. 즉, 단순하게 정의할 수는 없다는 것이 엘리엇의 생각이다. 그리고 ｢바이런｣의 대부분은 ��돈 주안��에 대한 엘리엇의 평가로 구성되어 있다. 여기서 엘리엇은 바이런의 재담가로서의 훌륭함, 바이런이 창작한 플롯의 우수함, 설화시로서의 훌륭함, 표현 방식의 탁월성 등을 바이런의 장점으로 규정한다.

This paper is to trace Eliot’s evaluation of Byron, focusing on Eliot’s “Byron” written by Eliot in 1937. Eliot tells that many people including critics don’t precisely evaluate on Byron’s literary quality. Certainly they are much interested in Byron’s life. Most of them agree with many kinds of facts on Byron’s life. But Eliot evaluates that they had no interest in Byron’s works. And Eliot diagnoses that the quantity of Byron’s works is deficient in proportion to the quality of his works. He thinks that Byron’s quality of his Don Juan is excellent, demanding that we should look at it carefully. He says that Don Juan has many excellent aspects in spite of a few faults. The excellency is the following: 1) an excellent story-teller, 2) skilful use of narrative methods, 3) a genius returning to subject with a proper velocity, 4) a unique quality in English poetry, etc. Concludingly, Eliot suggests that we should look at Byron’s works as well as his life with carefulness.
