본 연구는 일반학교 특수학급의 지적장애 남자중학생을 대상으로 원예치료 프로그램을 실시하여 사회, 심리, 정서적 행동특성과 손기능에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 2007년 8월 23일부터 12월 21일까지주 5회씩 총 76회 실시하였고, 6명을 대상으로 사회, 심리, 정서적 행동특성 검사지와 Purdue pegboard 검사를 통해 원예치료의 효과를 조사하였다. 사회, 심리적 행동특성은 대상자 6명 전부 향상되었으며, 원예반학생보다 부족하고, 특히 눈과 손의 협응 운동 부류의 정교한 운동기능 수행능력은 더욱 낮으며, 지능이 낮을수록 운동기능이 떨어진다(송, 2003). 원예치료는 지적장애인의 직업적응에 있어서 운동지각능력, 체력 및 지각적 인식능력, 쓰기능력 등 신체적 능력향상에 효과적인데(노, 2000), 지적장애 학생의 손 기민성을 Purdue pegboard 방법으로 평가한 결과 원예치료 실시 후 양손 및 조립 기능이 향상되었다(김 등, 2005).
치료 프로그램 실시 전 평균 42.8에서 실시 후 평균 62.5로 높아졌고, 통계적으로도 유의성을 나타냈다. 정서적 행동특성의 경우에도 프로그램 실시 전보다 실시 후 평균 6.9점 높아져 원예치료 프로그램이 효과적이었고, 통계적으로도 유의성을 나타냈다. 손의 기민성을 평가한 결과, 원예치료 프로그램 실시 후 오른손, 왼손, 양손의 기능이 향상되었다.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of horticultural therapy on the psychosocial behavior, emotional behavior and hand dexterity in mentally retarded middle-school boys. The six subjects were participated in this program, and the horticultural therapy programs(HTP) were conducted five times per week from 23 August to 21 December, 2007. To examine the effects of HTP, psychosocial and emotional behavior test and Purdue pegboard test were evaluated between before and after HTP. All subjects taken HTP were improved significantly in psychosocial behavior, and it's mean value was increased to 62.5 after HTP compared with 42.8 before HTP. The mean value of emotional behavior was lowered significantly by 6.9 after HTP than before HTP. Therefore, HTP was effective in promoting the psychosocial and emotional behavior in mentally retarded middle-school boys. In evaluation of hand function by Purdue pegboard test, dexterity of right, left, and both hand were significantly improved.
