경상대학교 도서관은 1989년부터 고서실을 설치하여 운영해오다가 2001년 10월 지역민의 도움으로 대학 내에 南冥學館이 건립되자, 고서실을 남명학관으로 이관하고 ‘文泉閣’으로 명명하여 재개관하였다.
문천각에서는 남명학 연구의 기초자료가 되는 경남지역 민간소장 고문헌을 다년간에 걸쳐 체계적으로 수집하였다. 문천각에서는 이렇게 수집된 고문헌의 원본은 영구보존하고 활용성은 획기적으로 개선하기 위하여 고문헌 디지털화 계획을 수립하였다.
경상대학교 도서관은 2004년부터 행정안전부 <국가DB 구축사업>을 유치, 2011년 남명학 관련 고문헌을 디지털화한 <남명학고문헌시스템> 개발을 완료하였다.
<남명학고문헌시스템>은 남명학 관련 문헌, 유학자 문집, 기록류, 고서 해제, 고문서, 책판 등을 디지털화여 인터넷을 통하여 대국민서비스를 제공하고 있다. <남명학고문헌시스템>을 개발함으로써 남명학 연구의 시간과 비용을 획기적으로 절감할 수 있게 되었고, 나아가 남명학 연구가 전국화􍾳세계화 될 수 있는 될 수 있는 기반을 갖추게 되었다.
경상대학교 도서관은 이 사업을 통하여 2010년 교육과학기술부 대학 도서관 특성화 평가에서 우수상을 수상하였고, 2011년 교수신문·국가브랜드위원회·교육과학기술부가 공동 주관한 <대학의 유산, 한국의 미래다>에 선정되기도 하였다.

Gyeongsang National University Library has been collecting old books and local archival materials since 1989 when it established the Department of Archives and Special Collections, which was then housed in the university library building. In 2001, the department was renamed 'Moon Cheon Gak(文泉閣)' and moved to Nammyong(南冥) Hall, a building newly erected in memory of a leading scholar of the Choseon Dynasty.
Moon Cheon Gak consists of the Preservation Division and the General Division. The Preservation Division preserves old threadbound books, engraved wood blocks, and archives. The General Division houses modern photocopies of old books, genealogical data, and has rooms for exhibitions.
The Department of Archives and Special Collection, Moon Cheon Gak, has now started to digitalize various kinds of old materials as part of a nationwide data base digitalization project supported by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security. The aim is to promote the history and culture of Western Gyeongsang. The digitalized materials include collections of Confucian scholars' writings, documents, exhibition of important old books, and engraved wood blocks.
The data base uses high resolution color imaging and replicates the experience of looking at the authentic document You can search the data base by using advanced search terms such as family name, last name, adult name, nom de plume, ancestral home, residential place, and birth date and year.
Original images allow you to check or compare whether there are any missing letters or misprints in modern versions.
The Nammyong collections are housed in Nammyong Hall and managed by Moon Cheon Gak. The books, documents, and archival materials made accessible online were selected among the materials in the Department. The collections form a unique research resource for the study of Master Jo Sik(1501-1527), whose most well-known nom de plume was 'Nammyong' or 'the Great Southern Ocean'. Nammyong was a well-known scholar from the mid Joseon Dynasty, who had a profound influence in scholarly circles west of the Nakdong River in the Gyeongsang region.
