이 연구는 한나 아렌트의 주저, 『인간의 조건』을 중심으로, 아렌트 사상의 주요 논제를 통해 한 국 교육 전반에서 다문화교육이 차지하는 위치와 그 교육적 의의를 규명할 목적으로 연구를 수행하 여, 다음의 세 측면에서 연구결과를 도출하였다. 첫째, 인간은 ‘다원성(plurality)’과 ‘탄생성(natality)’을 전제로, 누구나 타인의 현존을 전제할 수밖에 없는 존재이며, 인간 주체의 정체성은 정도의 차이가 있을 뿐 누구나 이 세계(지구)의 이주자라는 사실을 강조함으로써 근원적 차원에서 한국의 다문화교 육을 이해할 필요가 있다는 점을 논의하였다. 둘째, 한국 다문화교육에서 인간 활동인 ‘행위(action)’ 개념에 내재된 ‘용서(power of forgiving)’를 교육원리로 수용할 필요가 있다고 보았다. 셋째, 아렌트의 ‘평범한 악(banal evil)’의 개념으로 한국 다문화사회의 편견과 차별문제를 조명할 수 있으며, 현재 한 국적 다문화교육의 장애가 무엇인지를 밝혀주는 중요한 개념이 될 수 있다고 보았다.

This study reconsiders the status and significance of multicultural education in South Korea by examining some important ideas in The Human Condition, Hannah Arendt’s magnum opus. First, this study argues that the ideas of human “plurality” and “natality” provide a fundament understanding of multicultural education in South Korea. While one can be experience oneself only through the presence of others (plurality), any human being is an immigrant in the sense that he or she came into the world (natality). Additionally, this article maintains that multicultural education needs to consider Arendt’s idea of the power of forgiving-an “action” inherent in human activities (vita activa)-as a principle for education. Lastly, employing Arendt’s concept of “banal evil,” this study examines the problems of prejudice and discrimination against others as a major obstacle to multicultural education in South Korea.
