불교와 영화라는 서로 다른 두 분야가 만난 것인 만큼, 불교계와 영화계가 ‘불교와 영화의 만남’을 바라보는 시각은 다르다. 영화계가 보는 영화와 불 교의 만남은 장르 관심이고, 불교계가 보는 불교와 영화의 만남은 포교 관심 이다. 하지만 불교계와 영화계가 바라보는‘불교와 영화의 만남’이 이렇게 다르더라도 불교영화를 대상으로 하는 한 불교와 영화가 어떻게 만나는지에 대한 논의는 반드시 필요하다. 그동안 불교영화를 정의하면서‘불교 소재의 영화’부터‘불교 주제의 영 화’는 물론‘불교적으로 해석되는 영화’에 이르기까지 다양한 범주로 논의 해 왔다. 이 글에서는 불교영화로 널리 알려진 몇 가지 영화를 대상으로 불 교 소재와 주제 측면에서 불교와 영화가 만나는 경우를 논의하고, 최종적으 로 불교영화는 불교적으로 해석할 수 있어야 한다는 전제 아래 불교적 비평 이론의 한 예를 제시해 보았다. 불교적으로 해석할 수 있는 영화가 불교영화라는 시각은 그동안 불교 소 재나 주제에 바탕을 둔 불교영화가 뜻밖에 불교 가치를 제대로 구현하지 못 하고 있다는 비판에서 출발한 것이다. 그러므로 기본적으로는 불교 소재나 주제를 다루면서 불교 가치를 구현하는 불교영화를 지지하기 때문에, 비평 이론을 통해 불교적으로 해석할 수 있는‘불교적 영화’를 제시하는 이 글의 시각은 기존의 불교영화를 바라보는 시각을 대체하는 것이 아니라 제3의 시 각을 추가하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 시각이 필요한 또 한 가지 이유는 불교영화가 대중에게 받아들여질 수 있게 하기 위해서이기도 하다. 불교 소재와 주제가 전면에 드러난‘불교 영화’보다는 불교 소재와 주제는 잘 드러나지 않지만 불교적으로 해석할 수 있는‘불교적 영화’가, 종교영화의 틀을 넘어 일반영화로서 대중의 선택을 받을 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다.

As Buddhism is different from the movies, people in the Buddhist world and the film world see Buddhist encounter with the movies in very different ways. The latter does with interst of the genre; and the former with the propagation. Although, we need to study how to mix Buddhism with the movies as long as there was and are the‘ Buddhist movies’. In this paper, I examined some cases of Buddhist encounter with the movies in the way of Buddhist materials and the Buddhist theme, and suggested an example of the Buddhist critical theory on the based in the Buddhist interpretation on the movies. As it is based on my critical view on the Buddhist movies that could not realize the Buddhist value so far, my suggestion is for adding the third view on the Buddhist movies, not alternative. Social and cultural circumstance is most important for thinking about buddhist encounting the movies. When peple accept Buddhism as natural culture, it is possible that a good buddhist movie realized Buddhism in the way of buddhist materials and the buddhist theme. And I assert that the frame as a interpreting tool of Buddhism is necessary.
