The Effects of Career Identity, Satisfaction with Major, Adjusting to College Life and Self-Esteem of Students in the Department of Optometry and Optic Science at a University on Academic Achievement
Purpose: To examine the effects of career identity, satisfaction with major, adjusting to college life and self-esteem of students in the department of Optometry and Optic Science on academic achievement.
Methods: The survey was conducted for 108 students in the department of Optometry and Optic Science at D University, and the grade point average from university admission until first semester 2015 was used for the academic achievement. Collected data were analyzed by reliability analysis, factor analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance(ANOVA) and multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.
Results: Significant positive correlation was shown to all factors between career identity, satisfaction with major, adjusting to college life and self-esteem and the academic achievement, whereas the highest correlation with academic achievement was the adjusting to college life(r=.320). The factors having effects on the academic achievement were an interest and a talent(β=.356, p =.012) among career identity factors, and all the variables excluding satisfaction with curriculum for satisfaction with major were significant, while only the academic adjustment(β=.367, p=.032) among adjusting to college life factors had a significant effect, and the factor among sub-factors of self-esteem having an effect on the academic achievement was self-appreciation(β=.292, p=.047). The factors being put with significant variables in the same time having effects on the academic achievement were general satisfaction with major(β=.465, p=.002) and perceived satisfaction with major(β=-.415, p=.003), which showed significant effects on the academic achievement.
Conclusion: It is considered that the specific program being needed for the improvement of adjusting to college life and satisfaction with major appropriate to characteristics of the department of Optometry and Optic Science is required to enhance academic performance of students in the department of Optometry and Optic Science.
