본 연구는 야생조수(황새)보호지역에 사는 주민들의 환경적 인식에 관한 연구이다. 연구방법은 문화인류학적 접근방법의 하나인 심층인터뷰 방식에 의존했으며, 연구대상지는 경상북도 금위군 효령면 금매리이다. 연구의 주된 내용은 환경적 인식에 대한 문화적 구조를 밝혀내는 것이다. 연구의 결과는 황새에 대한 생태적, 긍정적, 부정적, 문화 생태적 관점에서 보면 다음과 같다. 첫 번째는 주민들은 황새의 먹이공급처, 종의 변화, 개체군, 이주, 생육, 서식처 그리고 예측 등의 생활에 대하여 예상을 넘어설 만큼 구체적으로 알고 있었다. 두 번째는 주민들의 긍정적 존재감과 마을에 대한 자부심을 가지고 있었다. 세 번째는 소음, 악취 그리고 수목에 대한 피해 등 환경적 불편함을 경험하고 있었다. 특이한 조수의 이동을 통해 주민들이 하루, 일년, 계절의 시간 변화를 인식하는데 매우 민감했다. 또한 조수의 이동 현상을 통해 그들은 계절에 대한 일기를 미리 예측을 하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 황새 서식지에 대한 문화생태적 관점에서 보았을 때 황새의 존재적 인식, 위계적 인식, 의미부여적 인식 등으로 구분하여 황새의 서식지에 대한 인식을 알아보았다. 비록 황새가 환경문제를 어느 정도 유발하고 있지만 마을 공동체의 중요한 일원으로 인식되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This study examined the environmental awareness of the inhabitants of a village towards a wild bird, Ciconia boyciana. The research methods were based on cultural ecology and comprised in-depth interviews, and the boundaries of the study area were set to Gemmarie, Gunwigun, Gyongbuk Province, Korea. The aim of this study was to determine the cultural component of environmental awareness. The results of this research are as follows in terms of positive and negative aspects. Firstly, the villagers are aware of the details of the life cycle of C. boyciana, and were much more aware than expected of its food providers, the alterations of species and population, migration, breeding, inhabitation, and forecast. Secondly, C. boyciana is strongly associated with positive sensitivity and are honored by the villagers. Thirdly, the villagers experience environmental discomforts owing to C. boyciana, such as noise, smell, and damage to vegetation. In particular, the villagers used C. boyciana to tell time, such as the day, season, and year. Also, they predicted the onset of spring via the migration patterns of C. boyciana. Ciconia boyciana is understood to be an important constituent of the village community although there were minor environmental problems. Residents also feel strongly about the presence and significance of their co-existence with C. boyciana.
