밀라노의 암브로시우스는 그의 생애와 사상을 통해, 그리스도인의 삶이 어떠해야 하는지를 보여주었다. 이 논문의 목적은 4세기 로마제국의 밀라 노에서 살았던 암브로시우스의 경제사상을 연구하고자 함이다. 현대사회는 신자유주의라는 경제사상을 중심으로 글로벌 시대를 형성하고 있지만 이 로 인해 발생하는 사회 양극화의 폐단은 가히 심각한 수준이다.

암브로시우스는 재산을 잃고 쫓겨난 수천의 참혹한 탄식들을 유산계급의 냉담한 세상에 대변하는 선지자로서, 그 당시 거대한 로마제국의 권력 과 부를 거머쥐고 탐욕에 가득 찬 사람들을 향해 공의로운 삶을 살도록 도전했다. 그는 부와 빈곤 간의 인과관계를 알렸고, 토지와 천연자원을 독점함으로 인간을 노예화하는 그 당대의 불의한 경제체제를 공의로운 희년사 회로 개혁되도록 강단에서 외치며, 삶의 현장에서 모범을 보여 주었다. 암브로시우스는 하나님의 공평과 정의에 근거하여 판단했다. 그의 비판은 로 마법과 제도에 대해서 합법 여부가 아닌 하나님의 공의 여부였다. 특히 그는 토지와 천연자원에 대한 사적 소유는 토지 소유주와 토지를 빼앗긴 자들 모두를 노예로 만드는 우상숭배임을 지적했다.

암브로시우스는 인간의 기본 평등권과 생득권을 환기시키면서, 토지소 유권의 독점에 대한 단호히 거부했다. 그는 인류연대를 통한 코이노니아 실천을 강조하는 대안으로 희년사상을 제시했다. 그는 스스로 사유재산을 포기하고 공동생활의 참된 풍요로움의 본을 보여 주었다. 공동체의 중심에 있었던 제도적 교회를 통해, 그는 가난한 사람들을 위해 식량보급, 장례지 원, 응급구호 등을 제도적으로 지원해 주었다.

결국, 암브로시우스의 경제사상은 현대사회의 양극화를 초래하는 토지 투기와 막대한 상속 등의 불로소득에 대한 불의를 지적해 주었다. 그는 또한 불로소득에 대한 반환과 부채탕감운동과 같은 그리스도인의 공의로운 경제사상이 무엇인지를 제시해 주었다.

In his whole life and thought, Ambrosius of Milan represented what the Christian life should be. The purpose of this article is to inquire into a study on the economic thought of Ambrosius in the fourth century of the Roman Empire, Milan. While modern societies are formed in the global era of neoliberal economic thought, resulting problem of social polarization that occurs is very serious.
Ambrosius exclaimed justice to the people that live a miserable life lost property towards the full greedy people that grab power and wealth of the Roman Empire. He argued that the relationship between wealth and poverty caused by rich people monopolize the land and natural resources. Looking at the time of the unjust economic system that humans fall into slavery, Ambrosius had declared the reform of a righteous society of the Jubilee, showed a practical example to life. Ambrosius had determined in the right alternative based on fairness and justice of God. His criterion was whether or not legal according to Roman law, was in God’s justice. Especially he exclaimed the private ownership of land was a serious crime, because it made enslavement of human beings.
Emphasizing the basic human right to equality and natural rights, Ambrosius was flatly denied the monopoly on land ownership. He also presented the Jubilee as an alternative thought, emphasizing that in practice the fellowship(koinonia) of human solidarity. He showed himself to give up private property and the example of the true richness of community life. Based on the institutional church which was the center of the community, he systematically supported the poor as like food supply, funeral assistance, emergency relief.
Thus, the economic thought of Ambrosius has shown the injustice of income, such as land speculation and immense inheritance leading to polarization of the modern world. He has also presented the direction of the economic thought of righteous Christians, such as the restitution of unearned income and the debt relief movement.
