본 논문에서는 영화 《디아워스》(The Hours, 2002)의 음악을 분석함으로써 내러티브와 음악 간의 상호 연관성을 연구하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 필자는 이 영화에서 빈번하게 등장하는 표면상 의 7화음(apparent 7th chord)에 주목하였으며, 이 7화음이 영화가 진행될수록 공통음 관계에 있 는 장3화음과 단3화음의 결합으로 이루어져 있음을 발견하였다. 보다 더 흥미로운 점은 이 영화에 서 중요한 주제로 다루어지는 삶과 죽음이 이들 장3화음과 단3화음의 교대로 표현됨으로써 영화의 내러티브에 반영된다는 점이다. 즉 장3화음과 단3화음의 대조적 음향은 삶과 죽음의 대조를 의미하 기도 하며 또한 최대한의 공통음 관계에 있음으로써 삶과 죽음의 연관성까지 표현한다고 볼 수 있 다.

The paper examines some correlations between the narrative and music by analyzing the film music of The Hours(2002). First of all, I focused my attention to the apparent 7th chords, frequently shown in the music, and found the 7th chord is composed of the combination of common-tone related major and minor triads. Interestingly, the conflict of life and death, an important theme in the film, is expressed by the alternation of major and minor triads. Thus, the contrasting sound of major and minor triads can be related to the contrast of life and death, and the common-tone relation between major and minor triads also expresses the relationship between life and death.
