본격적인 디지털항법시대의 도래와 더불어 그 핵심이라 볼 수 있는 전자해도(ECDIS)가 신조선에 대해서는 일부 선박을 제외하고는 이미 강제탑제화가 되었으며 현존선에 대해서도 그 선종과 크기에 따라서 2018년도 7월1일 이후 첫 SE검사전까지 점차적으로 그 탑제를 의무화하고 있다. 이는 항해사들이 실무에서 종이해도가 아닌 전자해도를 이용해서 항해를 해야함을 의미하고 동시에 ECDIS handling관해 항해사들의 높은 직무능력을 요구하고 있다.
