Selection of the Expectation Factors of the List of Lexical and Grammatical Items Designed to Develop the Readability Formula
This study has selected the expectation factors of the list of lexical and grammatical items with an aim to develop the readability formula, which is the statistical assessment of the effect of vocabularies, grammatical items and the expected factors on the standard paragraph. Creating this readability formula requires the criteria to select lexical and grammatical items, and most preceding researchers selected them under the influence of readability studies on English and Korean. Against this backdrop, this study has selected lexical and grammatical items that serve as the bases of the readability formula as well as the vocabulary expectation factors. This study has examined the vocabularies and grammar items studied by some official institutions on a national level and selected the lexical and grammatical items Han Song-hwa(2015) and Yang Myung-hee (2015) as the most reliable ones as well as the lexical expectation factors. The lexical and grammatical difficulty and the expected factors are critical elements that have a direct effect on analyzing the degree of difficulty for text. Studying the readability of the Korean language without the objective criteria is subject to a risk of bringing the result tailored to the researcher's objective. With this in mind, this study has set the criteria for lexical and grammatical items, and lexical expectation factors. This study will pave the way for more objective and reliable follow-up studies for readability of the Korean language.
