교육은 지식과 학습자 중 어느 한 가지만으로는 이루어질 수 없다. 지식과 학습자는 교육의 양대 지주로서, 교육은 이 두 가지를 모두 고려해야 한다. 이러한 당위적 명제는 어휘 교육에서 우리가 해야 할 것들이 무엇인지에 대해 명확한 생각을 부여한다. 어휘지식이란 언어교육에서 매우 중요한 요소이며, 어휘지식을 습득한다는 것은 단순히 어휘의 겉으로 드러난 뜻 아니라 상징적 의미를 파악하고, 의미의 폭을 이해하고 사용하며, 어휘가 사용된 문맥이나 상황들을 정확히 알고 있으며, 사용시 구조적 혹은 상황의 제약 속에서 그 기능과 사회성에 맞게 효과적으로 사용할 수 있는 총체적 능력을 말한다. 한편 이와 관련된 논의로 문식성을 말하기도 한다. 문식성이란 ‘문자 해독 능력’에 국한되었다가 현재는 언어 또는 매체를 대상으로 한 표현 및 이해 능력을 뜻하는 포괄적 개념으로 쓰인다. 이에 따라 문자 문맹이 아닌 실질 문맹을 감소하기 위해서 다시 한자교육을 강화하자는 논의도 등장하였다. 그러나 한국어 속의 한자어 교육과 관련된 논쟁은 매우 독특한 양상을 지니고 있다. 기존의 선행연구에서 살펴보듯 대부분은 한글 전용과 한자 혼용을 주장하는 연장선상에서 한자 교육의 필요성 여부를 논의하였다. 언어교육의 중요성과 어휘교육의 관계, 그리고 어휘 교육에서 한자어 교육의 가치와 장단점을 심도 있게 분석하고, 국어 어휘의 특징과 한자 교육과의 관련성을 고찰한 연구는 불과 수 편에 지나지 않는다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 한자와 한글 표기 논쟁에서 벗어나, 체계적 한자어 교육이 어휘 교육에 미치는 영향에 대해 과학적인 방법과 절차에 따라 합리적으로 해결하려는 연구자들의 공통된 자세가 요구된다. 본고에서는 그 구체적인 방안으로 공동 연구의 방법을 제안하였다.

Education can not be done by either knowledge or learners. Knowledge and learners are the two pillars of education, So education should consider both point. This legitimate proposition gives us a clear idea of what we should do with our vocabulary education in Korean. Vocabulary knowledge is a very important element in language education, and acquiring vocabulary knowledge is not simply the superficial meaning of a word, but the ability to understand and use the full meaning of a word, as well as the width of its meaning. On the other hand, the discussion is related to the issue about Literacy. Literacy is used as a comprehensive concept that was limited to 'literacy' and now refers to the ability to express and understand language or media. There was also talk of strengthening Han-character education in order to reduce real illiteracy, not Character literacy. However, the controversy regarding Sino-Korean words education in Korean has a very unique aspect. As we have seen in previous preceding studies, most discussed the need for Han-character education as an extension of the argument for the exclusive use of Han-gul and the use of Han- characters. Only a few studies have examined the importance of language education, the relationship between vocabulary education, and the value and advantages of Han-character education in terms of vocabulary education, and the relation between the characteristics of Korean vocabulary and Han-character education. In order to solve this problem, researchers who seek to solve the problem reasonably by scientific means and procedures on the effects of systematic classical written language(by Han-characters) by education on vocabulary education, instead of debating the controversy over Han-characters and Han-gul. This report proposes the method of joint study in its concrete way.
