엘리아데의 종교 현상학에서 성스러움은 초역사적 개념이지만 역사와 전혀 무관하지 않다. 왜냐하면 성스러움은 여러 역사적 조건에 의해서 제약되기 때문이다. 하지만 엘리아데에 따르면 성스러움은 역사적 조건을 뛰어넘는 종교 현상의 핵심적 상수이다. 따라서 엘리아데의 종교 연구의 목표는 여러 종교 현상들에서 성스러움이 드러나는 일반적인 패턴을 찾아내는 것이다. 본 논문에서 필자 의 관심은 엘리아데의 성스러움의 변증법이 그의 유대-기독교 서사를 해석하는 데서 어떻게 해석학적 원리로 작동하는지를 탐구하는 것이다. 엘리아데는 유대- 기독교 서사가 순환론적 역사 이해를 극복하고 직선적 역사 이해를 제시하고 있다고 평가함과 동시에 그 역사 자체가 창세기 1-11장의 성스러운 역사를 여러 상징을 매개로 반복하고 있음을 주장한다. 또한 그는 성스러운 역사의 전개는 성스러움의 변증법에 지배를 받고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 하지만 그는 유대- 기독교 전통의 한 특징적 요소인 믿음이라는 범주가 유대교와 기독교 역사의 형성에서 추동력이었음에도 주목하고 있다.

For Eliade, the sacred manifests itself only in history. However, the sacred is viewed as independent of historical conditions. Therefore, the goal of Eliade’s study of religion is to illustrate the general patterns of the sacred across various religious phenomena. This paper focuses on showing how Eliade’s dialectic of the sacred serves as a hermeneutical framework with which to understand religious phenomena, with special attention to the Judo-Christian tradition. While estimating that the Judeo-Christian narrative offers a linear view of history overcoming cyclical view of history, Eliade holds that Judeo-Christian salvation history repeats the sacred history of Genesis 1-11 through the mediation of various religious symbols. Moreover salvation history has, in his view, developed as described in his central thesis of the dialectic of the sacred. However, he also notes that faith, which constitutes a peculiar element of the Judeo-Christian tradition, serves as the driving force for the formation of Jewish and Christian history.
