본 연구는 종교개혁의 신앙전통의 계승을 강조하고 있는 재림교회의 설립자 중 한 사람인 엘렌 화이트의 루터 이해를 역사신학적 관점에서 평가하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 화이트의 루터 이해는 그녀의 대표작인 『대쟁투』 시리즈에서 구체적으로 드러난다. 화이트의 루터에 대한 연구는 루터 탄생 400주년인 1883 년에 집중적으로 이루어졌다. 그 연구 결과를 바탕으로 1884년부터 1888년까지 이어진 『각 시대의 대쟁투』에서 루터에 대한 기록을 남겼다. 특별히 루터에 대한 그녀의 글들은 메를 도비녜와 같은 19세기 교회사가들의 글들을 인용하는 형태로 이루어졌다. 그녀는 루터를 선악의 대쟁투 역사에서 매우 중요한 역할을 한 인물로 소개하고 있다. 이런 목적에 따라서 그녀는 루터를 위대한 개혁자로 소개하면서 루터의 전기 작가들의 영향을 받아서 루터에 대한 역사적 오해들을 반복한다. 아울러 루터의 인간적인 면모들, 즉 결혼 이슈, 농민운동에 대한 부정적 평가, 반유대주의적 행동 등 역사학적 이슈들은 다루지 않았다. 이처럼 화이트의 루터 이해는 대쟁투적 관점에서 종교개혁을 완성시킨 인물됨을 부각시키려는 기록 의도와 더불어서 평가할 필요가 있다.

This study aims to evaluate the understanding of Luther by Ellen White. Based on the results of the study, he wrote a record of Luther in the Great Controversy from 1884 to 1888. In particular, her writings about Luther were made by quoting the writings of 19th century church historians such as Merle D’Aubigne. She introduces Luther as a man who had a great influence in the history of the great controversy between good and evil. According to this purpose, she introduces Luther as a great reformer, but reiterates historical misunderstandings about him under the influence of his biographer. Nor did she deal with some important historical issues or Luther’s personal aspects, such as marriage issues, negative assessments of German peasant movements, and anti-Semitic behavior. As such, White’s understanding of Luther should be evaluated in parallel with her record intention to highlight the human image that completed the reform of religion from a historical view of the Great Controversy.
