The remnants of Ondol can be found as far back as 5000 years. It is a mechanism that uses fire to create indirect radiation and puts it to use to heat the living spaces. Ondol is a system that most effectively and efficiently uses conduction, radiation and convection of the heat from the fire, and this fire is used and tended is different ways considering the region and the time period. Each piece of the Ondol system have there own function in the distribution of the heat energy and it's conveyance. The pieces of the Ondol system are as follows: agungi, bulmok, gudeulgaejari, gorae, gudeuljang, and room floor. Considering the importance of fire in Ondol, it is significant to consider the mythological importance of fire. The fire god has several functions/skills: the bringing of fortune/abundance, purification, and prevention of disaster. Ondol reflects these functions in its significance and operation. Ondol also has a direct scientific and biological connection with the Korean people who benefit from its use. Not only does it have habitual and sociological influences, but it is also a method that is environmental friendly.
With the current state of environmental destruction, it is imperative to find ways to minimize the damage to our ecosystem. The United Nation argues for a “Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development.” The answer to saving our ecosystem is neither in development nor preservation, but in cultivation. Cultivation is the best answer to bringing the ecosystem at least a little back to its original form. The Ondol minimizes excessive waste and is a way that cultivates nature, which can be seen through Ondol's impact on lifestyle. The cultivation starts from the most basic of human nature by targeting habitual life.

随着环境破坏的现状，找到可以减少我国生态破坏的方法势在必行。联合国称为“无害环境和可持续发展”。拯救我们的生态系统的方法重点不是发展不是保护,而是培养。培养可使生态系统至少稍微回到原来的形式。温突浪费最小，是培养自然的一种方式.我们可以看到温突对生活方式的影响。培养从人类最基本的生活习惯性开始。
