이 연구는 제국주의 일본이 불법적으로 독도편입을 시도한 1905년 전후 일본 사료에 나타난 울릉도·독도에 대한 지리적 인식을 검토하고, 이를 통하여 일본의 왜곡된 독도영유 권 주장의 실태를 재확인하고자 한다. 1905년 일본의 불법적 독도편입 조치와 함께 지금까지 이어져 온 일본의 독도영유권 주장의 본질은 그 출발점이 일본제국주의의 침략과 침탈 야욕에서 발생하였다는 점이다. 즉 1904년 발발한 제국주의 국가인 러.일 양국 간의 전쟁 수행과정에서 일본이 독도를 불법적으로 편입하였다는 점을 간과해서는 안된다. 근 세.근대기 일본 고문서에 나타나는 혼란된 지리적 인식은 1905년을 전후한 시기에 눈에 띄게 줄어든다. 이미 서양의 근대적 과학기술을 앞서 수용한 일본은 근대적 측량법 덕택으로 경위도나 거리를 큰 오차 없이 정확히 측정할 수 있었다. 이러한 경위도 위치나 거리 측정은 울릉도·독도에 대한 지리적 인식을 보다 정확하게 가질 수 있도록 해주었다. 그러나 문제는 이러한 지리적 인식의 정확도보다 울릉도·독도의 명칭을 어떻게 확정할지가 더 큰 관건이었다. 아이러니하게도 러일전쟁은 이러한 명칭혼란을 종식시키고 독도를 죽도(다케시마)라는 명칭으로 부를 수 있도록 하는데 기여하였다. 그것은 일본이 러일전쟁에 승리하기 위해 전략적 필요성에 의해 독도를 불법 편입해야 하는 상황이 만들어졌기 때문이다. 결국 독도는 제국주의 일본의 영토팽창 정책 속에 ‘죽도(다케시마)’라는 원치 않는 이름으로 불법적으로 편입된 일제강점기의 첫 번째 희생물이 된 것이다.

This study aimed at examination of recognition of Ulleungdo and Dokdo in Japanese representative Official Records before and after 1905. Imperial Japan illegally attempted to include Dokdo in this year. We can reaffirm Japan's distorted claims of sovereignty over Dokdo. In 1905, with illegal include of Japan over Dokdo, the ever-lasting nature of Japan's claims of sovereignty over Dokdo until now is that it happened in its ambitions for Imperialism Japan's invasion and pillage in the point of departure. In other words, it should not be overlooked that Japan illegally included Dokdo in the war between the two imperialist countries, Russia and Japan, which broke out in 1904. Confused geographical awareness appearing in modern Japanese ancient documents is noticeably reduced around 1905. Japan, which has already accepted the modern science and technology of the West, was able to accurately measure its latitude and distance without much error thanks to the modern measurement method. Having such a longitude and latitude position and distance measurements, they could have the geographical awareness over Ulleungdo and Dokdo more precisely. The problem was, however, how determine the name of Ulleungdo and Dokdo than this accuracy of geographic recognition. Ironically, the Russo-Japanese War contributed to ending confusion of name and to naming Dokdo as Jukdo(Takeshima). Because the strategic situation was made to win the Russo-Japanese War, so Japan should be incorporated Dokdo into an illegal by the need. After all, in territorial expansionist policy of imperial Japan, illegally incorporated Dokdo became the first victim of the Japanese colonial era which doesn’t want to naming ‘Jukdo(Takeshima)
