일본 시마네현이 2005년에 ‘다케시마의 날’을 제정한 이래 매년 2월 22일에 기념행사를 실시하고 있다. 이를 계기로 일본의 독도 도발은 끊이지 않았고, 한일 간의 정치적 갈등은 심화되었다. 특히 일본의 초중등학교 사회과 교과서에서 독도가 일본의 영토로 기술됨에 따라 한국의 반발이 거세지고 독도교육은 한층 강화되었다. 그러나 한국의 초중 등학교 사회과 교과서에 기술된 독도 관련 내용은 여러 가지 문제점이 보인다. 그것은 첫째, 중학교 사회와 역사 교과서, 고등학교 한국지리와 한국사 교과서에서 다루는 독도 내용의 중복이 많고 계열성이 부족하다. 둘째, 이들 교과서의 본문 기술과 수록 지도에는 독도와 관련하여 부정확한 내용이 보인다. 초중등학교 사회과 교과서의 독도 내용이 정확 하고 충실하도록 수정 및 보완이 요구된다.

Shimane Prefecture, Japan, enacted “Takeshima Day” in 2005, and the celebration has been held on February 22 every year. As a result, the provocation against Dokdo by Japan continued, and the political conflict between Korea and Japan intensified. In particular, as Dokdo was described as Japanese territory in Japanese social studies textbooks in elementary and secondary schools, the backlash from Korea has intensified and Dokdo education was reinforced. However, Dokdo-related contents in Korean social studies textbooks in elementary and secondary school have various problems. First, there are many overlaps and lack of sequence about Dokdo contents which are described in middle school social studies and history textbooks and high school Korean geography and Korean history textbooks. Second, the descriptions and maps of these textbooks include inaccurate contents on Dokdo. Correction and revision are required to improve the contents of Dokdo in the elementary and secondary school social studies textbooks.
