현재까지 방지일에 대한 선교학적 연구는, 한 편으로는 1957년까 지의 중국선교에 집중했고, 다른 한편으로는 방지일의 중국선교가 현재 의 한국선교에 주는 의미나 영향을 탐색했다. 그런데 양쪽의 공통점은 연구가 대체로 영등포교회의 외부자들의 관점에서 전개되었다는 점이 다. 이러한 시도들은 방지일의 중국 선교와 영등포 목회를 별개의 것으로 만드는 경향이 있다. 이런 점을 고려하면서, 이 연구는 내부자라 고 할 수 있는 영등포교회 출신의 목회자들이 볼 때 방지일이 선교와 목회를 어떻게 이해했는지를 선교적 교회의 관점에서 탐구했다. 차마즈 (Cathy Charmaz)의 구성주의적 근거이론(constructivist grounded theory)을 준용하여, 이 연구는 방지일에게 있어서 선교와 목회의 주체가 하나님이기 때문에 선교와 목회는 구분되거나 나누어질 수 없다는 것을 발견했다. 따라서 목회는 선교적이어야 하고, 동시에 선교 는 목회적이어야 한다. 그리고 선교와 목회는 목회자의 구체적인 삶의 실천으로부터 시작되어야 한다. 이런 목회자의 선교적 삶이 없는 선교적 목회나 목회적 선교는 가능하지 않고, 그 반대도 마찬가지이다.

To date, the missiological research on Pang Ji Ihl has been developed mainly in two directions. On the one hand, most of the research on Pang’s mission has focused largely on his mission to China until 1957. On the other hand, some researches have explored the meaning or influence of the mission on the present Korean mission. Nevertheless, what both directions have in common is that the research has largely evolved from the perspective of the outsiders of Yeongdeungpo Church. These tend to separate the mission and ministry of Pang. With this in mind, from the perspective of the missional church, this research has explored that pastors from Yeongdeungpo Church, as insiders, understood what Pang’s understandings of mission and ministry were like and how he related the former to the latter. Employing Cathy Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory, this research has found that for Pang, because God is the subject of both mission and ministry, the two cannot be separated or divided.
