현재 한국불교에서 ‘법화계 불교종단’이란 ‘법화’라는 이름을 종단명 칭에 사용하거나『법화경』을 소의경전으로 하는 종단 일체를 지칭하는 것으로 넓은 범위에서 상정할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 이 중 본고에서는 선행연구들에서 공통되게 동일한 연혁을 공유하는 것으로 제시되 었던 한국불교법화종, 대한불교법화종, 일승종, 불입종, 관음종을 대상으로 하여, 그들 사이의 분종의 역사와 각 종단의 현황을 살펴보았다. 이들은 대체로『법화경』의 회삼귀일 및 일불승 사상의 중시,『법화경』제목 봉창의 강조, 합장불의 불단 안치, 기도의 생활화 경향 등을 초창기의 공통된 특징으로 지닌다. 이 중 제목 봉창의 강조에 대해서는 다분히 일본 법화계 종단의 영향을 받은 것으로 보는 시각이 존재하기도 한다. 하지만 이 종단들이 가꿔 온 전통에 대한 인식과 미래에 대한 비전들은 이들이 일본 법화종단으로부터의 영향을 어느 정도 인지하면서도 동시에 그로부터 벗어나야 된다는 깊은 자의식을 지니고 있었음을 보여 준다. 현대 한국불교는 새로운 종파불교의 부활인 것처럼 보이는 측면이 있다. 하지만 어쩌면 그것은 종교 내적인 원인에 의하기보다는 국가권력에 의해 추동된 제도와 법령으로부터 동인된 것일지도 모른다. 한편 현대의 새로운 종파 중 일부는 오롯이 한국의 종교문화 전통에서 자생하였다기보다 상당 부분 근대성 또는 외래문화와의 길항 관계 속에서 탄생의 당위를 얻은 것일지도 모른다. 중요한 것은 어떠한 모멘텀에 의하여 어떤 경위로 시작되었던 간에, 그 익숙한듯 새로운 종단들이 이 땅의 민중 속에 어떻게 뿌리 내리며 성장해 가는가 하는 것이다. 그리 길지 않은 역사 속에서 전통을 가꾸어 가고자 하는 한국 법화계 불교종단의 오래된 미래는 지켜볼 가치가 있다.

Contemporary Korean Lotus-Sutra Buddhist order is defined as the name of Buddhist orders whose names include ‘Lotus’ or whose main sutra is Lotus-Sutra. I chooses Korea Buddhism (Hankuk-Bulgyo) Beop Hwa Order, Korea Buddhism (Daehan- Bulgyo) Beop Hwa Order, Korea Buddhism Il Seung Order, Korea Buddhism Bul Ip Order and Korea Buddhism Guan Eum Order. They have been recognized to have common history in their early times in proceeding studies. I am concerned with the history of their schisms and the present state of the each order. They have the common features, especially of their early times, in that they attach importance to the idea of ‘All the people are possible to be Buddha’(一佛乘), the repeated recitation of the title of Lotus-Sutra, the statue of Buddha with his hands clasped in prayer, and the daily sincere prayer. The repeated recitation of the title of Lotus-Sutra has been thought to have been influenced from Japanese Lotus-Sutra Buddhism by many scholars. It may be true, but at the same time Korean Lotus-Sutra Buddhist orders have consciously endeavored to overcome the Japanese influences and to excavate and cultivate the Korean traditional Lotus-Sutra belief. Contemporary Korean Buddhism has many Buddhist orders and thus seems to restore the condition of Order-Buddhism of the pre-modern times. But the situation of contemporary Korean Buddhism like that may be the result of the official systems and the official laws made by the state authority. Or it may be the result of the conflict with other countries’ cultures. The important is that the old new orders should grow up in the people of this country as the new old tradition. So the probable growth of the Korean Lotus-Sutra Buddhist orders deserves watching.
