백만장자 가문의 윌리엄 보든(William Whiting Borden, 1887-1913)은 비록 그가 의도한 중국에서의 선교사역을 시작하기 전 소천 하였지만 이상적인 선교사의 한 표상으로 기억되고 있다. 이 연구는 예일대 신학도서관의 특별소장자료로 있는 보든의 대학시절 서한들을 중심으로 하였다. 이 자료는 그의 인생의 중요한 형성기에 그의 일상적 삶과, 신앙적 사고 및 선교사로서 헌신된 삶을 준비하도록 하는데 중요한 영향을 미친 자들이 누구인지를 보여주는 1차 사료가 된다. 보든의 서한들은 또한 당시 학생자원선교운동(Student Volunteer Movement)의 여파와 그 영향력을 보여주기도 한다. 한 시대를 볼 수 있는 역사적 창구와 같은 이 서한들이 보여주는 바를 통해 그의 삶은 선교역사상 소위 “위대한 세기”(The Great Century)라 고 일컬어지는 시대에 일던 복음주의적 부흥운동과 선교운동의 교차로 에 있었다고 할 수 있다.

William Whiting Borden (1887-1913), an heir to millionaire business, is remembered as an ideal missionary even though he died before he began a missionary career in China. This research is based on Borden’s letters during his college years archived in special collections of Yale Divinity School. His letters provide primary source materials to construct his missional life story during the formative years of his life. We can find not only casual stories but also his Christian thoughts and important figures who influenced him toward missionary preparation. Borden’s letters also demonstrate the impact of the Student Volunteer Movement during his days. Borden’s life is at the crossroads of the revival movement and the missionary movement during the era of “The Great Century” in mission history.
