이 글은 여성 작곡가 진은숙에 관한 다양한 텍스트를 고찰함으로써 한국 사회에서의 여성 음악가의 재현에 관하여 살펴보고자 한다. 진은숙은 동아시아 여성으로서 백인 남성 중심의 서구 현대 음악계에서 주류 작곡가로 자리매김한 작곡가이며, 현재 한국에서도 활발하게 활동을 이어나가고 있다. 이 글의 목적은 서구 음악계에서 성공적인 입지를 구축한 한국 출신의 작곡가 진은숙은 누구인가, 그녀를 둘러싼 텍스트들은 그녀가 누구라고 말하는가, 그리고 그 말하기의 방식에서 드러나는 담론의 의도는 무엇인가를 탐구하는데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 관련된 이론과 서구에서의 진은숙 재현의 양상을 간략히 정리하고, 한국 사회에서 여성 작곡가 진은숙을 재현하는 양상이 매체에 따라 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지 살펴본다. 뉴스 기사에서의 재현은 진은숙이 해외에서 거둔 성공을 동일시함으로써 국가적 자부심을 고취하는 데에서 시작하여, 한국에 돌아와 활동하는 진은숙을 애국자로 묘사하고, 그녀의 작품을 현대음악 정전의 위치에 올려놓는다. 다른 한 편으로 진은숙은 개인으로서나 작곡가로서나 ‘여성으로서’ 재현된다. 『객석』등의 잡지기사에서는 진은숙을 더 이상 여성으로 재현하지 않고 전문가로서의 작곡가로 재현하며 서술 태도가 변화하는 특정 시점이 나타난다. 이 연구는 작곡가 진은숙에 관한 담론을 통하여 여성 음악가를 바라보는 한국 사회의 관점과 태도를 고찰하려 했다. 이러한 시도가 음악을 통하여 한국사회를 들여다보는 창이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

This paper aims to examine the representation of female musicians in the Korean society through studying various texts about the female composer, Unsuk Chin. Chin is a Korean(Asian) female composer who has made a successful achievement in the Western music world. Also, she has been actively continuing her career in Korea over decades. The purpose of this study is to analyze what the texts surrounding her say about her, and the way these texts describe her which reveals the intention of the discourse. In order to do so, this paper first briefly reviews the relevant theories and the aspects of Chin's representation in the West, and studies how the aspect of representing female composer Chin in Korean society differs according to the different types of media. The representation in the news papers begin with promoting national pride by identifying Chin's international success as Korea's, and then describes Chin, who works actively in Korea, as a patriot. In recent years, they place her work in the position of a contemporary music canon. On the other hand, as an individual and a composer, Chin is always represented as a 'woman' in the news articles. However, the magazines such as "The Seats" show a different point of view about Chin; she is no longer represented as a woman, yet a professional composer. This research is an attempt to see in what way and attitude the Korean society perceives female musicians through studying the "discourses" about Chin, the composer. It is expected that this effort will offer a channel to look into the Korean society through music.
