문학 번역은 작가나 시인의 상상력을 통한 창조력과 예술성이 농축된 언어의 결과물을 타 언어로 재창조하는 과정이다. 따라서 번역가/번역기계는 표면적 의미뿐만 숨겨진 의미에 대한 고차원의 번역 능력과 기술 이 요구된다. 무엇보다도 문학 번역은 단순한 언어의 전환이 아닌, 문화와 작가/시인과 독자를 연결해주는 소통의 미학이 되어야 하는 점이 중요하다. 이 글에서는 엘리엇의 마지막 시중 하나인 크리스마스 트리의 수양과 프로스트의 크리스마스 트리를 기존의 번역과 기계번역을 서로 비교해 보았다. 크리스마스 트리의 수양에서 기계번역은 예수 그리스도의 재림을 기쁨과 두려움, 그리고 경이로움으로 바라보려는 한 노인/시인의 마음을 잘 드러내지 못했다. 또한 크리스마스 트리에서도 도시와 도시인의 냉정하고 차가운 이미지를 간과하기에 도시를 빛나던 장소로 오인하게 하였다. 이처럼 기계번역은 시인이나 작가의 의도를 파악하지 못하고 표면적인 묘사나 단어 나열에 그칠 수 있는 위험성을 다분히 보인다. 따라서 문학에서 기계번역은 당분간 인간번역에 종속적으로 사용될 필요가 보인다.

Literature translation is the result of language enriched with creativity and artistry through the imagination of writers or poets, and it is the process of recreating it in another language. Therefore, human/translation machines require high-level translation capabilities and skills for hidden meanings as well as superficial meanings. Above all, it is important that literary translation is not the simple change of language, but the aesthetic of communication that connects cultures, writers/poets, and readers. In this paper, one of Eliot’s last poems, “The Cultivation of the Christmas Tree” and Frost’s “Christmas Tree” were compared with conventional and machine translations. Machine translation did not reveal Eliot’s subject well that encourages us to view the mind of an old man nearing death with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the joy, fear, and wonder of the Christmas tree. In addition, Frost’s poem overlooked the cold image of the city and its people, so the city was mistaken as a place where it shined. In this way, machine translation shows the danger of being limited to superficial descriptions or word listings because it cannot often grasp the intentions of poets or writers. Therefore, machine translations in literature will be used subordinately to human translations for a while.
