환상문학 작가이자 기독교 변증가로 자처했던 C. S. 루이스는 한 작가의 사상이 그의 문학적 상상력과 교감되는 방식에 관한 흥미로운 질문을 불러일으킨다. 성서의 에덴 신화를 홀로서기의 유혹이라는 관점에서 재형화한 『페렐란드라』도 그 중 하나다. 여기서 루이스는 등장인물들이 야기하거나 경험하는 다양한 도덕적 갈등의 상황을 그려내는데, 여기서 그는 기독교 사상가로 자신의 신념들을 문학적으로 개연성이 있게 드러내 보인다. 가령 작품의 시작 부분에서 화자 ‘루이스’의 짧지만 강렬한 내적 갈등은 도덕적 결단의 상황에서 실재에 바탕을 둔 이성과 욕망에서 기인하는 상상력의 상충되는 역할에 대한 문학적 사례 연구처럼 읽힌다. 또 주 대적자 웨스턴의 당혹스런 움직임 역시 독자들을 도구적 이성의 위험, 자기애의 욕망과 상상력 등, 다양한 도덕적, 철학적 갈등의 드라마로 이끌어 들인다. 랜섬이나 초록 여인 등 다른 주 인물들을 분석해 보면, 이에 대한 논의는 더 풍성해질 것이다. 루이스의 다른 소설들 및 철학적, 변증적 작품들과의 상세한 비교, 분석은 루이스가 그의 사상과 문학적 상상력을 자연스럽게 융합하는 방식을 더욱 선명하게 만들어 준다.

The works of C. S. Lewis, both a renowned fantasy writer and an avowed Christian apologist, invite us to ponder some interesting questions about how an author’s ideology interacts with his or her literary imagination. Perelandra, Lewis’s imaginative reworking of the biblical story of Eden and the temptation of independence arising from self-love, reflects this case in point. In the book, Lewis portrays various situations of moral conflict. His characters either create this conflict or experience it in ways that divulge his Christian convictions, arguably, with impressive literary plausibility. The short, yet intense, inner struggle of the narrator at the outset of the work reads like a literary case study of the conflicting roles of ‘reason’ and ‘imagination’ in moral decision-making. The intriguing moves of Weston, the major antagonist of the work, also draws readers into the web of various moral philosophical struggles. An extensive comparison with Lewis’s other works, literary or philosophical/apologetic, will help us to more fully understand the degree and shape of this fusion of his ideas and literary imagination. Further studies on the other major characters of the work, such as Ransom the protagonist and the Green Lady of Perelandra, will enrich our understanding.
