본 논문은 역대 서론에 나타난 품평의 개념과 그 내면의 미학적 가치를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 역대 서가 들은 서예를 품평하는데 격조, 자연, 대비 등의 방법을 통 해 간결한 언어와 생동감 있는 비유법을 많이 사용하며, 말로 전달하기 어려운 서예적 특징에 대해 깊이 묘사하고 있어 많은 여운을 남기고 있다. 품평의 등급에서는 먼저 ‘능품(能品)’은 필묵의 기교, 필법, 묵법, 결구, 장법 등이 정통함을 뜻하지만 ‘묘품(妙品)’ 보다 서가의 독창적인 개성미, 풍격미, 자연미, 정서미가 확연하지 않으며, ‘신품(神品)’과 비교해 ‘능품’의 서가는 천부 적인 재능이 부족하고 ‘일품(逸品)’에 비해 정취가 부족함을 뜻한다. ‘일품’과 ‘신품’은 모두 서예의 가장 높은 등급으로써 ‘일 (逸)’은 비교적 노장철학의 무위(無爲) 사상과 가까우며, ‘신(神)’은 비교적 공자철학의 중화사상에 가깝다. 기법 중시의 ‘신품’은 마음이 하고자한 바, 법도를 넘어서지 않는 것이고, 기법을 초월하는 ‘일품’은 자연의 묘와 같은 것이다. 따라서 ‘일품과 신품’은 모두 서예의 최고 형식이지만 ‘신품’이 ‘일품’ 보다 낮다고 보는 이유는, 인위적인 흔적이 그래도 존재하기 때문에 아래에 두고 평가한 것이다.

This paper purports to discuss the concept and characteristics of the four-level theory among the precedent level theories and to analyze its inner aesthetic values. In appraising calligraphy, the precedent calligraphers have used concise languages and a lot of metaphorical methods of active form through comparison of personal characters, nature, and contrast, which describes in-depth the features of calligraphy difficult to convey in words and leaves lingering impressions to descendant students. In the levels of the theory, first of all, 'Precise Level' means good in writing skill, penmanship, ink skill, formation skill, and location skill in using brush and ink, etc. However, compared to 'Personalized level', it less expresses the uniqueness in personality, character, naturalism and emotion of the writers compared to those of ‘Nature-harmonized level’ and lacks of talents and emotions compared to those of ‘Superior level’ Both ‘Superior level’ and ‘Nature-harmonized level’ are the highest levels in the Chinese calligraphy, and ‘Superior’ is relatively close to the Wu-Wei egolessness of the Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu philosophy, and the ‘'Nature harmonized level' is relatively close to the Natural fusion ideology of the Confucius philosophy. The ‘Nature-harmonized level’ emphasizing the technique means that the mind does not go beyond the precepts, and the ‘Superior level' that goes beyond the technique is the same as that of nature. Therefore, 'Superior level' and 'Nature-harmonized level' are both the highest levels of forms in calligraphy, but the reason that 'Nature -harmonized level' is considered to be lower than 'Superior level' is that artificial traces still remain, so we less appraise it between them.
