1992년 10월에 창립된 한국선교신학회의 태동은 1990년부터 시작되었다. 학회의 창립을 위하여 처음 모인 선교신학자들은 1991년 가을, 한국기독교학회에 선교신학회의 신설을 청원하였다. 이듬해 창립총회에서 회장 서정운, 부회장 전재옥, 서기와 회계의 업무를 겸한 총무로 이광순 교수가 선출되었다. 선교신학의 위상을 강조한 서정운 초대회장과 선교의 활성화를 뒷받침해야 할 선교신학의 빈약함 을 역설한 전재옥 교수. 이들을 도와 준비모임에서부터 창립, 학회 등록과 학술지 발간 등 실제적인 역할을 감당한 사람은 이광순 교수이 다. 이들은 나란히 1,2,3대 회장을 역임하였으며 그 임기는 각각 2년이 었다. 이글은 한국선교신학회의 태동기 활동을 소개한 글이다. 불과 몇 십 명이었던 회원에서 오늘날 300여 명의 회원을 둔 학회가 되기까지 초대 총무에 이어 제2대 총무인 채수일(1994년) 교수와 제3대 총무인 홍기영(1996년) 교수의 수고를 잊어서는 안 되며, 학회 발전을 위하여 수고한 태동기 선구자들의 순수한 열정을 계속 이어가야 할 것이다.

The Korea Society of Mission Studies was established in October 1992. However, early formation began in 1990, In the fall of 1991, the mission theologians who first gathered for the founding of the Society petitioned the Korean Christian Association for the establishment of the Mission Theology Society. At the inaugural general meeting of the following year, Pres. Jung-won Seo, V. Pres. Jae-Oak Chun, and General Secretary Kwang-soon Lee were elected. The first Pres. Jung-won Seo, emphasized the status of mission theology, and Prof. Jae-Oak Chun emphasized the weakness of mission theology that should support the vitalization of missions. Prof. Kwang-soon Lee helped them and took on practical roles, from preparatory meetings to establishment, registering for conferences, and publishing academic journals. They served as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd presidents side by side, and their term of office lasted 2 years each. This article introduces the early activities of the KSMS. We must not forget the hard work of Prof. Soo-il Chai(1994) and Prof. Ki-young Hong(1996) increasing the few dozen members to 300 members in the Society today.
