초록

The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) and yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula) are medium-sized carnivorous mammals in Korea. To determine their dietary habits, feces of leopard cats and yellow-throated martens were collected from Jirisan Mountain and hairs from the feces were analyzed in a non-invasive manner. Results showed that both species mainly preyed on Rodentia, with yellow-throated martens also consuming fruits and insects. Notably, they hunted wild boars and roe deer/water deer. Their ability to prey on animals larger than themselves suggests they can serve as ecosystem regulators in the absence of large carnivores such as tigers and leopards. This study aimed to investigate their dietary habits through non-invasive hair analysis. Findings of this study provide baseline data for habitat identification and conservation research.
