A Comparative Study of Ideological Characteristics in Lüshi Chunqiu, Huainanzi, and Chunqiu Fanlu through Text Mining and Table of Contents Analysis
This study delves into three pivotal texts - the Lüshi Chunqiu(呂氏春秋), Huainanzi(淮南子), and Chunqiu Fanlu(春秋繁露) - through the lens of digital humanities. Emerging against the backdrop of a pressing need for political unity and ideological synthesis during the late Warring States and early Han periods, these works proffer distinct perspectives: the Lüshi Chunqiu advances an institutional framework, the Huainanzi a conceptual one, and the Chunqiu Fanlu the sacralization of royal authority. Synthesizing diverse schools of thought into a pragmatic theory of governance, the Lüshi Chunqiu lays the groundwork for unifying the realm by way of seasonal observances and historical precedent. The Huainanzi enriches Daoistinspired cosmology, linking the harmony between heaven, earth, yin, and yang with governance and spiritual refinement. The Chunqiu Fanlu systematizes the concept of heaven-human resonance, thereby solidifying both the sacrosanct nature of royal power and the dominance of Confucian ideology. These texts collectively chart key junctures in ancient Chinese thought, marking a transition from intellectual pluralism, via philosophical integration, toward a Confucian-centered orthodoxy. To illuminate the intricacies of this progression, this research employs text mining to scrutinize the frequency of terms and semantic relationships within these texts. Further, it probes the structural organization of each text’s table of contents to discern salient ideological traits. This digital humanities approach offers new insights into classical studies.
