A Study of Response Function of ‘X+shi’ in the Dialogue Corpus
This paper has discussed the response function of ‘Xshi’ in conversation through the collection and analysis of a dialogue corpus. It also summarizes and outlines the functions and features of response markers ‘Xshi’, it have been limited to individual studies, and attempts to reconsider the discursive value of response markers in which ‘shi’ appears. First, we considered the preceding sentence and the ‘X是’ response sentence as a ‘adjacency pairs’ ,and categorized the discourse functions. This showed that even the same form of ‘Xshi’ has different response functions depending on what type of preceding sentense utterance it is responding to. In addition, we selected ‘ye-shi’, ‘na-shi’, ‘cai-shi’, ‘wo-sho’ to compare and analyze the characteristics of the response functions. The most diverse response function is ‘ye-shi’, which is characterized by the same function as ‘na-shi’ and ‘wo-shi’ and ‘positive answer’ and ‘humble/concession’ as ‘cai-shi’. The combined reduplication and capitalization of these ‘Xshi’ sentences have a common feature of ‘emphasis’, but they differ in terms of the focus of emphasis. This shows that ‘Xshi’ can be used within a response sentence to organize multiple forms depending on the attitudes of the respondent and the preceding speaker, and the context of the event, and that it can exhibit different response functions.
