미국수도협회(American Water Works Association, AWWA)는 2022년 Water 2050이라는 글로벌 이니셔티브를 출범하여 지속가능하 고 회복탄력적이며 혁신적인 물의 미래를 모색하고 있다. Water 2050은 지속가능성, 기술, 경제, 거버넌스, 사회·인구통계 등 다섯 개 분야의 싱크탱크를 기반으로, 물의 관리, 가치, 접근 방식을 혁신하기 위한 47개의 권고행동을 도출하였다. 이러한 권고사항은 △지속가능성과 회복탄력성, △혁신과 순환경제, △원 워터(One Water) 거버넌스와 정책, △재정과 부담가능성, △형평성·접근성·지역사 회 참여 등 다섯 가지 전략적 우선순위로 체계화되었다. 현재는 상하수도 분야의 다양한 이해관계자가 참여하는 전략이행팀(Strategic Implementation Teams)을 통해 실행이 추진되고 있다. Water 2050은 북미를 기반으로 하지만, 협력과 지식 교류, 공동 혁신을 중시하는 전 세계적 비전을 지향하며, 대한상하수도학회(KSWW)와의 협력을 포함한 국제 파트너십은 스마트 인프라, 디지털 시스템, 순환경제 발전에 핵심적인 역할을 수행하고 있다. Water 2050은 글로벌 통찰, 신기술, 형평한 접근을 통합함으로써, 모든 사람이 지속가능하고 경제적이며 접근 가능한 물을 이용할 수 있는 미래로의 전환을 가속화하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.

In 2022, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) launched Water 2050, a global initiative to envision and advance a sustainable, resilient, and innovative water future. Guided by five foundational think tanks—Sustainability, Technology, Economics, Governance, and Social/Demographics—Water 2050 generated 47 recommended actions to transform how water is managed, valued, and accessed. These actions have since been organized into five Strategic Priorities: Sustainability and Resilience; Innovation and Circular Economy; One Water Governance and Policy; Finance and Affordability; and Equity, Access, and Community Engagement. Implementation is underway through Strategic Implementation Teams that bring together diverse voices across the water sector. While rooted in North America, Water 2050 represents a global vision that emphasizes collaboration, knowledge exchange, and shared innovation, with international partnerships—including with KSWW—playing a critical role in advancing smart infrastructure, digital systems, and circular economy practices. By integrating global insights, emerging technologies, and equitable approaches, Water 2050 seeks to accelerate progress toward a future where water is sustainable, affordable, and accessible for all.
