미국은 수많은 전쟁과 분쟁에 개입하여 왔다. 미국의 동맹국 중 어떤 국 가는 미국이 개입한 전쟁에 참전을 하는 반면, 다른 국가는 전쟁에 개입하 지 않는다. 왜 그러한가? 본 연구는 비대칭동맹관계에서 발생하는 미국 동 맹국의 참전에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 경험적 연구이며 동맹국의 미 국에 대한 군사적, 경제적 의존도에 주목한다. 미국과의 동맹관계에서 동 맹국이 의존도가 심해지면, 미국이 수행하는 전쟁에 쉽게 연루된다. 1950 년에서 2014년 사이에 발생한 미국이 개입한 전쟁에 미국의 동맹국의 참 전여부에 영향을 미친 요인을 통계적 방법으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 동 맹국의 군사적 의존도인 미국의 주둔병력과 경제적 의존도인 미국과의 무 역량과 경제원조는 전쟁 참전 가능성에 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 가설이 검증되었다. 통제변수 중 GDP, 국경 인접 여부, 전쟁 참전 국가수는 참전 에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 연구를 통해 동맹국의 군사 적, 경제적 의존도가 미국이 개입한 전쟁에 참전(연루)하게 되는데 영향을 미치는 것이 검증되었다. 본 연구는 한국을 비롯한 미국의 주요 동맹국들 의 동맹에 대한 정책제언과 추후 연구에 함의를 제공한다.

This study explores why some U.S. allies participate in U.S.-involved wars while others do not. Focusing on asymmetric alliances, it empirically analyzes the factors influencing allies’ participation, particularly their military and economic dependence on the United States. Using statistical data from 1950 to 2014, the results demonstrate that allies’ military dependence, represented by the presence of U.S. troops, and economic dependence, measured through trade and U.S. aid, significantly increase the likelihood of participation in U.S.-led wars. Among the control variables, GDP, border proximity, and the number of participating countries also showed significant effects. The findings confirm that military and economic dependence on the United States plays a decisive role in shaping allies’ wartime behavior and provide policy implications for major U.S. allies, including South Korea.
