본 논문은 지금까지 거의 알려지지 않은 추명순(1908–1994) 전도사의 삶과 사역을 ‘하나님의 선교’의 관점에서 분석하는 것이다. 추명순은 일제강점기의 신사참배에 굴하지 않고 교회를 지켰고, 해방 이후 가장 소외된 지역인 전북 고군산군도에 들어가 평생을 오늘날 ‘하나님의 선교’의 주요 과제인 ‘주변으로부터의 선교’를 실천한 인물이 다. 그의 사역 특징을 몇 가지로 정리하면, 먼저, 전도·교육·구제·돌 봄이 결합된 통전적 선교라고 할 수 있다. 다음으로, 낙도라는 열악한 환경에서 복음을 전하며 변방의 하나님 나라의 운동을 이끈 대표적 사례이다. 셋째, 가부장적 사회에서 여성으로서, 목사가 아닌 전도사로 서 선한 리더십을 발휘하여 소위 ‘고군산군도의 어머니’라고 불리며 그리스도의 빛을 드러냈다. 결국 추명순 전도사의 삶과 사역은 위기에 처한 오늘의 한국 교회사 가야 할 새로운 길과 선교의 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
This paper explores the life and ministry of the little-known evangelist Chu Myeong-sun(1908–1994) from the perspective of Missio Dei. During the Japanese colonial period, she resisted forced Shinto shrine worship and safeguarded the church. After 1945, she devoted her life to “mission from the margins” in the Gogunsan Archipelago, one of Korea’s most marginalized regions. Her ministry embodied holistic mission by integrating evangelism, education, relief, and care, and stands as a representative case of proclaiming the gospel in remote island contexts. As a woman and evangelist, she exercised benevolent leadership, earning the title “Mother of the Gogunsan Islands.” Ultimately, her life and ministry offer fresh directions and possibilities for the Korean church today.
