본 연구는 돌봄의 역사와 한국의 돌봄 정책을 고찰하고, 노인 돌봄노동에서 요양보호사의 노동 현실을 탐색하였다. 연구 방법으로는 시설과 방문을 포함한 요양보호사 10명을 심층 면접함으로써 ‘돌봄’과 ‘노동’의 경계에 있는 이들 업무의 ‘이중적 경계성’에 대한 입장에서 문제점과 대안을 살펴보았다. 보건복지부에서 그들에게 명시한 업무에도 불구하고, 요양보호 사 업무는 공적영역과 사적영역이 종종 애매하며, 자격증을 가진 전문인력임에도 보수, 복 지, 자부심 등에서 여전히 전문성을 인정받지 못하고 있다. 또한 그들은 육체적 노동강도 뿐 아니라 매우 높은 감정적, 정서적 노동강도를 가진다. 예를 들면, 치매 노인의 계속적인 욕설, 돌봄 수급자 가족과의 갈등, 돌보던 노인의 죽음 등을 들 수 있다. 이제는 이들 돌봄 노동자들의 애매한 경계의 공간을 ‘혼용의 공간’과 ‘가능성의 공간’으로 발전시킬 때다. 한국 사회가 돌봄을 수행하는 돌봄자에 대한 ‘돌봄’과 ‘처우개선’을 통해 공존과 상생의 관계로 나아가기를 기대한다.

This study examines the history of care and Korea's care policies and has explored the labor realities of nursing care workers in care work for the elderly. As a research method, by conducting in-depth interviews with 10 nursing care workers, including facilities and visits, the position as in-between beings in the boundary of ‘care’ and ‘labor’ on the 'double liminality' of these tasks is identified, and problems and alternatives are examined. Despite the work specified to them by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the work of nursing care workers is often ambiguous in the public and private spheres, and even though they are licensed professionals, they are still not recognized for their expertise in compensation, benefits, and pride. In addition, they have very high emotional and sentimental labor intensity as well as physical labor. For example, continuous abusive language by caring elderly people with dementia, conflict with the families of care recipients, and death of elderly people who were caring. Now is the time to develop the ambiguous boundary space of nursing care workers into a ‘hybrid space’ and a ‘space of possibility’. It is hoped that Korean society will move toward a relationship of coexistence and co-prosperity through ‘care’ and ‘treatment improvement’ for caregivers who perform care.
