The Youxian dialect belongs to the Jicha cluster of Gan Chinese and exhibits typical Gan dialect features. The phonetic-semantic relationship of xia{下} in Youxian dialect is complex:The falling tone [xa⁵³] likely reflects the retention of the Middle Chinese voiced obstruent initials in the upper tone category and may serve a disambiguating function. The dipping tone [xa¹¹] originates from Middle Chinese voiced obstruent initials in the Departing tone category or the upper tone category. Its semantic range partially aligns with the Hu ya qie (胡雅切) and Hu jia qie (胡駕切) phonetic traditions, and it can also function as an adverb expressing totality. The high-level tone [xa³⁵], derived from the historical upper tone category of voiced obstruent initials, represents an internal evolutionary feature of Gan dialects and corresponds to the core meaning of “base/bottom” (底也) in Hu ya qie. Analyzing phonetic-semantic correspondences in Chinese dialects constitutes a critical task for Chinese phonosemantic studies.
