목적 본 연구는 Olson의 The Human Animal(1997)의 관점을 적용하여 정신과 병동에 근무하 는 정신간호사가 경험하는 돌봄의 의미를 탐색하고 이해하고자 시도되었다. 방법 자료수집은 2025년 9월 1일부터 9월 30일까지 K와 J도에 소재한 정신과 병동에 근무하는 정신간호 사 8명을 대상으로 일대일 심층 면담을 통해 이루어졌으며 주요 질문은 “정신과 병동에서 근무하는 정신간 호사의 정신질환자 돌봄 경험은 어떠한가?” 였다. 자료분석은 Braun과 Clarke(2006)의 주제중심 내용 분 석을 사용하였다. 결과 연구 결과 4개의 주제와 8개의 범주가 도출되었다. 주제는 ‘환자안의 인간성 발견’ , ‘비인간적 존재 로 보게 된 경험’ , ‘돌봄 부담과 감정적 소진’, ‘간호사로서 성찰과 성장’이었으며, 범주는 ‘환자이지만 따뜻 한 마음을 발견’, ‘정서적 유대감을 가진 존재로 인식’, ‘환자의 이상 행동에 대한 두려움’, ‘병동안의 위험한 존재로 인식’, ‘환자 강박 치료과정의 어려움’, ‘환자의 증상으로 인한 정서적 소진’, ‘같은 인간으로 정체성 인식’, ‘인격적인 존중과 공감하기’였다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 정신간호사는 정신과 환자를 돌봄에서 환자의 다차원적 특수성을 반영한 통합적 접근이 중요함을 확인하였다. 결론 본 연구는 정신간호사의 정신과 환자 돌봄 경험을 통해 인간 정체성에 대한 인식과 간호 실무에서 복합성을 탐색하고, Olson의 휴먼 애니멀 관점이 정신간호 실무에서 갖는 의미를 제시하였다. 정신간호 실 무에서는 환자의 생물학적 안전과 관계적·정서적 차원이 통합적으로 고려한 돌봄이 요구되며, 정신간호사의 감정적 소진은 돌봄의 질에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 요인이 될 수 있으므로 교육적 지원과 조직적, 제도 적인 지원 강화의 필요성이 시사되었다.

Objectives This study aimed to explore and understand the meaning of care experienced by psychiatric nurses working in psychiatric wards by applying Olson’s The Human Animal(1997) perspective. Methods Data were collected through in-depth, one-on-one interviews with eight psychiatric nurses working in psychiatric wards located in K and J provinces from September 1 to September 30, 2025. The main interview question was, “What are the experiences of psychiatric nurses in caring for patients with mental illness while working in psychiatric wards?” Data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s (2006) approach. Results Four themes and eight categories were identified. The four themes were “Discovering humanity within patients,” “Experiences of perceiving patients as non-human beings,” “Burden of care and emotional exhaustion,” and “Reflection and growth as a nurse.” The eight categories included discovering warmth in patients, recognizing patients as emotionally connected beings, fear of patients’ abnormal behaviors, perceiving patients as dangerous beings within the ward, difficulties in the process of physical restraint, emotional exhaustion due to patients’ symptoms, recognizing shared human identity, and providing respectful and empathetic care. The findings indicate that psychiatric nurses recognize the importance of an integrative approach that reflects the multidimensional characteristics of patients with mental illness in the caregiving process. Conclusions This study explored the complexity of perceptions of human identity and nursing practice through psychiatric nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with mental illness and highlighted the significance of Olson’s human animal perspective in psychiatric nursing practice. The findings suggest that psychiatric nursing care requires an integrated approach that considers patients’ biological safety alongside relational and emotional dimensions. Furthermore, as emotional exhaustion among psychiatric nurses may directly affect the quality of care, the need for strengthened educational support and organizational and institutional support systems was identified.
