Breeding of a Garden Chrysanthemum ‘Yello Star’ with Yellow Semi-doubled Florets and Distinctive Fragrance KCI 등재

The Floriculture Research Institute of Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services developed a new yellow bedding chrysanthemum cultivar, “Yello Star,” using chrysanthemum germplasm resources. The cultivar was selected from a seedling population derived from an artificial cross between the female parent “G13-031-26” and the male parent “G15-068-08,” followed by multi-year cultivation trials to verify the uniformity and stability of its major traits. “Yello Star” exhibited a hemispherical growth habit and a late-flowering characteristic, blooming in late October under natural daylength conditions. The ray florets displayed a bright yellow color corresponding to Yellow 9A on the RHS color chart, and the flowers showed a semi-double form with a low proportion of disc florets. Major growth characteristics included an average flower diameter of 3.5 cm, 726.8 flowers per plant, 181.7 ray florets per flower, and a plant height of 23.5 cm, while leaf color corresponded to Green 137B. Compared with the control cultivar “Geumbangul,” “Yello Star” differed in plant habit, flowering time, and flowering characteristics and showed stable performance with minimal variation across repeated cultivation trials. Additionally, basal shoots developed naturally from the stem base, enabling plants to maintain a balanced canopy without pinching. Qualitative analysis of floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showed that monoterpene compounds accounted for the largest proportion of total VOCs in both cultivars, representing 83.95% in “Yello Star” and 69.45% in “Geumbangul.” Particularly, chrysanthenone, eucalyptol, and camphene were the predominant compounds in “Yello Star,” suggesting a clear, cool, minty-herbal fragrance, whereas (+)-camphene, γ-terpinene, and eucalyptol predominated in “Geumbangul,” indicating relatively stronger piney and resinous notes. These results indicate that “Yello Star” is a late-flowering bedding chrysanthemum cultivar with a desirable plant habit, stable performance, and distinctive floral fragrance, making it well suited for autumn festivals and open-field landscape use.
